THE RACE: Both campaigns claim words being twisted

Both presidential campaigns are complaining that their candidate's words are being twisted against them.

Little has changed in the political landscape since Mitt Romney clinched the Republican nomination two months ago. With fewer than 100 days to go, polls still show an extremely tight race with the limp economy still the overriding issue.

Romney was in Poland on the third leg of his overseas trip. But before leaving Israel, he told Jewish donors at a Monday breakfast in Jerusalem that their culture is partly why they have been more economically successful than the Palestinians.

That outraged Palestinian leaders, who called the comments racist and out of touch.

The Romney campaign was quick to fire off an email suggesting his remarks had been mischaracterized and urging "anyone covering the speech to use his actual words"

Romney said in Jerusalem that "I recognize the hand of providence in selecting this place" and noted "culture makes all the difference" in "disparities in the economic success of various countries." He also cited "Mexico and the United States" without elaborating.

President Barack Obama greeted new foreign ambassadors at the White House before a fundraising trip to New York City.

Meanwhile, his campaign was running an ad in several battleground states criticizing Romney's attacks on Obama's comments on small-business entrepreneurs.

Romney ads show Obama saying "If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

"Those ads taking my words about small business out of context? They're flat out wrong," Obama says, looking into the camera and addressing voters in his 30-second spot. "Of course Americans build their own businesses."

Obama had been talking about the government's supporting role in providing a stable environment in which businesses can thrive.

Suit filed over 'Expendables 2' stuntman's death

(AP) ? The parents of a stuntman killed while working on the film "The Expendables 2" filed a wrongful death lawsuit Thursday against the makers of the action film.

Kun Liu was killed during a stunt in Bulgaria in October 2011 while performing in a rubber boat on Ognyanovo dam, just outside the capital, Sofia. He died after suffering wounds from a nearby explosion.

His parents Zong Yu Liu and Yan Mei Bai are seeking unspecified damages of more than $25,000 against Millennium Films and the movie's stunt coordinator, Chad Stahelski.

Stahelski and Elizabeth Wolfe, a spokeswoman for Millennium Films, declined comment on the case.

Kun Liu, 26, was a native of Beijing and his parents are suing for funeral and burial expenses as well as "the loss of society, love, comfort, attention, services and support" of their son. They claim the filmmakers and Stahelski "negligently and carelessly failed to provide adequate protection from hard to the participants of the stunts."

"The Expendables 2" stars Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger and is due to be released in the United States on Aug. 3.

Bulgarian authorities at the time reported another stuntman was seriously injured during the explosion that killed Kun Liu.

Obama pledges to work with Congress on violence

(AP) ? In one of his most expansive responses yet to gun crime, President Barack Obama on Wednesday embraced some degree of control on the sale of weapons but said he would also seek a national consensus on combating violence. He said responsibility for curtailing bloodshed also rests with parents, neighbors and teachers to ensure that young people "do not have that void inside them."

Speaking just six days after the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that left 12 dead, Obama pledged to work with lawmakers of both parties to stop violence, not only the sudden massacres that have bedeviled the nation, but the steady drip of urban crime that has cost many young lives.

"We should leave no stone unturned and recognize that we have no greater mission that keeping our young people safe," Obama said in a speech to the National Urban League.

Obama called for stepped-up background checks for people who want to purchase guns and restrictions to keep mentally unbalanced individuals from buying weapons. He says those steps "shouldn't be controversial, they should be common sense."

But he also added: "We must also understand that when a child opens fire on other children, there's a hole in his heart that no government can fill."

Obama's speech represented a bookend to a four-day trip that began in Colorado on Sunday when he visited with survivors of the theater massacre.

For Obama, the address to the National Urban League was a necessary overture to a voting bloc that overwhelmingly backs him but that has sustained much of the brunt of the economic downturn.

In his speech Obama promoted his economic and health care policies, tailoring what has become a standard campaign speech to his African-American audience. He drew attention to initiatives that have helped Americans in general, and African-Americans in particular.

But, as he did during his 2008 campaign, he also pressed personal responsibility.

He said young Americans are competing against kids in Beijing and Bangalore. "You know, they're not hanging out ... they're not playing video games, they're not watching 'Real Housewives,'" he said. "I'm just saying. It's a two-way street. You've got to earn success."

Ahead of Obama's remarks, the Urban League played a video showing photos of famous African-Americans that culminated with images of the president and his family the night of the 2008 election. The crowd of several thousand responded with thunderous applause that was sustained as Obama walked on stage and peppered with chants of "four more years."

Obama spoke on the same day that the Senate gave him a political victory by passing an extension of Bush-era tax cuts for households with less than $250,000 in earnings. The president has made retaining current tax rates for middle-class taxpayers a central piece of his economic policy while rejecting Republican efforts to extend the current tax rates for all. Under Obama's plan, taxes for wealthier Americans would rise. The Senate measure, however, was expected to go no further because of the Republican-dominated House.

While enthusiasm among some Obama supporters has faded since 2008, support for America's first black president remains high among African-Americans. In a recent Associated Press-GfK poll, 82 percent of black adults said they would vote for Obama. His approval rating among blacks was 87 percent.

Obama skipped an appearance at the NAACP earlier this month, raising questions about whether his campaign was taking black voters for granted. The White House blamed a scheduling conflict and sent Vice President Joe Biden to address the nation's oldest civil rights organization.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney also addressed the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, raising eyebrows when he told the crowd: "If you want a president who will make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him."

Obama announced that he would sign an executive order on Thursday that creates a new office to bolster the education of African-American students. The White House says the office will coordinate the work of communities and federal agencies to ensure that these youngsters are better prepared for high school, college and career.

Obama also was raised campaign money at two separate stops in New Orleans: an intimate 20-person event at the cost of $25,000 per person, and a larger event at the House of Blues for 400 people, with tickets starting at $250.

Obama raised at least $6 million at events this week in California, Oregon and Washington. The president started the trip Sunday with a stop in Colorado to meet with survivors and families of the victims of last week's movie theater massacre.

Cross-Platform Gaming Startup TreSensa Locks Up $1 Million In ...

Well, New York-based TreSensa is having a busy morning. The cross-platform gaming startup revealed that it has locked up a cool $1 million in angel funding, and launched its new TreSensa game engine SDK into public beta.

TreSensa is the brainchild of Rakesh Raju and Tremor Video alums Rob Grossberg and Vincent Obermeier, who departed from the digital video company shortly after it acquired ScanScout in 2010. In short, the year-old company?s mission is to provide support and tools to developers who want to create HTML5 games for players sitting at desks or on the go.

The company?s focus on cross-platform gaming may seem worlds away from Tremor?s digital video roots (the pair was apparently ?burned out on video?), but Grossberg tells me that the theories behind both projects aren?t that different. According to him, both companies aim to provide ?content creators an in emerging arena? with the tools to make them successful. For Tremor, that meant (among other things) helping those creators monetize their videos with ads, but TreSensa game creators will be able to tap into the company?s distribution services and the ability to integrate features like asynchronous multiplayer (currently in private beta).

It?s up to each developer to decide how much they want to bank on TreSensa?s platform ? they can dive in head-first and use TreSensa?s own game engine, but that?s hardly a requirement. Co-founder Obermeier was quick to note that developers who use other engines or SDKs will still be able to add TreSensa?s additional features into the mix.

?We?re making TreSensa component-sized,? he said. ?Say you?re using Unity or Corona ? you can do that and still use our backend services to implement things like multiplayer support.?

Of course, helping to monetize those games remains a big focus for TreSensa ? the company?s first step is to implement support for current monetization models like offering paid virtual goods and digital currencies. From there, the pair peg advertising as playing a critical role because of the extensive reach that HTML5 games have ? after all, they can be played by anyone with a smartphone or a reasonably up-to-date web browser.

It?s still early days for TreSensa, but the startup?s development platform has already garnered some attention from interested investors. As it turns out though, that angel fund raising process was relatively painless, mostly because Grossberg and Obermeier entered into it with a considerable network of contacts and resources.

?We?re not spring chickens here,? Grossberg quipped.

That said, it?s not like the two of them embarked on the process without any help. Grossberg cites New York startup incubator First Growth Venture Network as a crucial resource for the team as they worked to get TreSensa off the ground. Now, developers and media companies are showing signs of interest in TreSensa?s nascent offerings. YouTube content partner Mondo Media recently used TreSensa?s game engine SDK to create an HTML5 game based on the Happy Tree Friends franchise, and Grossberg mentioned to me that a ?very large, New York-based media company? has expressed interest in TreSensa?s multiplayer functionality.

TreSensa is focused on building HTML5-based technology solutions for casual game developers. Its technology reduces costs and time spent to build casual games, eases in-game social interactions, enables broad cross-platform distribution, and optimizes/maximizes in-game revenue potential.

FHA Streamline refinance - Can I switch lenders? - Zillow Mortgage ...

As stated, you don't have to stay with Wells - go look for another lender who will give you a lower rate, plus close the loan in less than 30 days. On the surface, that rate of 4.00% is extremely high! ?Granted, there may be reasons for such a high score, such as a very low credit score.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any further questions, I'd be glad to help.

Good luck?& all the best,

NASA hires SpaceX for science satellite launch

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Jul 19, 2012 8:23pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA hired Space Exploration Technologies to launch an ocean monitoring satellite, a key win for the start-up rocket company that also wants to break into the U.S. military's launch business, NASA officials said on Thursday.

The $82 million contract covers launch, payload processing and other services for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's ocean-measuring Jason-3 satellite, which is slated to fly in December 2014.

Launch would take place from SpaceX's new complex at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

NASA, which handles procurements for NOAA, also awarded three launch contracts, worth $412 million for Delta 2 rockets built by United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing Co.

One of the satellites earmarked for a Delta 2 flight is the replacement for a carbon dioxide tracking satellite lost in February 2009 after a failed launch on an Orbital Sciences Corp Taurus rocket.

The launches, slated for July 2014, October 2014 and November 2016, also will take place at Vandenberg.

SpaceX, which is owned and operated by internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, already holds NASA contracts worth $1.6 billion to fly cargo to the International Space Station, a $100 billion laboratory that orbits about 240 miles above Earth.

The company in May successfully flew a demonstration mission to the station, a key milestone in its efforts to win U.S. military launch contracts as well.

ULA currently has a monopoly on U.S. military launch business. But in an attempt to certify more launchers, the Air Force is expected to award a non-ULA launch services contract this year for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR), a former NASA Earth-monitoring satellite being repurposed by NOAA into a solar observatory. A request for bids under the Air Force's Orbital/Suborbital Program (OSP-3) was released May 11.

The criteria for new launchers was jointly developed by the Air Force, the National Reconnaissance Office and NASA.

The new NASA contract is the first evidence that Falcon 9 meets the new launcher criteria.

SpaceX will have plenty of chances to build Falcon's flight history. The rocket's launch manifest includes more than 40 flights, including 12 station cargo flights and the Jason-3 ocean survey satellite for NASA.

Recently, we ran a series (Part 1 and Part 2) on the work of Dr. Kathleen Arcaro, using breast milk to help determine breast cancer risk. ?The response to the posts was overwhelming with both posts together being read by over 3,600 people. We are confident that, with the help and encouragement of IBCLCs, women all over the country can be involved in this exciting research.

Dr. Arcaro is now looking for a new set of breastmilk samples: ?those from women who either currently have or have previously had breast cancer. ?These samples can be either fresh or frozen.

If you know of a mother who fits this profile, please have them contact Beth at (413) 545-0813 or?email her.? If not, please help by spreading the word however you like ? Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Whew! Wiggins, weary Tour riders get last rest day

PAU, France (AP) ? Bradley Wiggins knows he's well-positioned to win the Tour de France. But with the banged-up, frenetic and weary pack nearing the final rest day of the three-week race, he wasn't taking any chances Monday.

A hasty, nervous start to Stage 15 in the Pyreness foothills ultimately gave way to a stage victory by Pierrick Fedrigo. The Frenchman led a six-man breakaway as Wiggins played it safe ? almost 12 minutes behind in the pack.

The 99-mile route from Samatan to Pau was a mostly flat layout that might favor a sprint finish, but teams with strong sprinters didn't lay chase.

Fedrigo bolted from the breakaway group with about four miles left, with Christian Vande Velde of the U.S. the only rider able to keep pace. The American, not a sprint expert, lost the two-man dash.

Sprinters and breakaway specialists saw this course as one of their last chances to win a stage, knowing mountains and a time trial dominate the last five race days.

"I thought the attacks at the start wouldn't last so long. It went on for almost two hours, but the terrain took its toll," Wiggins said, referring to the deceptively hilly route. "There are a lot of tired bodies out there."

From the outset, Wiggins was cautious. He noticed a "little problem" with his bike, got off and chucked it onto the roadside as his Team Sky staff quickly fetched another.

"I changed it right away because I preferred doing that than taking a risk if the race went all out after that," Wiggins said.

Overall, Wiggins leads second-place teammate Christopher Froome by 2:05. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy is third, 2:23 behind, while defending champion Cadel Evans remains fourth, 3:19 back.

"There are some gaps, but it's never finished. We are in a good position, that's for sure," pointing to Saturday's time trial, one of his specialties. He won the first one over 26 miles in Stage 9. The upcoming time trial in Stage 19 is 33 miles.

"We've already seen it. It's not easy," he said. "The last time trial at the Tour is not the same as the one in the first week."

Wiggins has not thought much about the punishing days that await in the Pyrenees on Wednesday and Thursday. The ride on Thursday features six climbs, including an uphill finish.

"I just always look one day at a time," he said. "I always think if you start looking too far ahead you forget what's in front of you."

Garmin-Sharp team manager Jonathan Vaughters, who once had Wiggins on his team, said he's been predicting a victory by the Briton for months ? in part because this year's layout suits his strengths.

"Brad's biggest rival in this race is Brad, in his own head, and as long as he stays calm and focused then he's going to win it" he said. "I've always felt that this Tour was going to be a runaway for Wiggins."

Fedrigo, of the FDJ-BigMat team, won a Tour stage for the fourth time in his career and gave France its fourth stage win this year. He said the victory was especially satisfying because he had been sidelined for six months last year after suffering from Lyme disease.

Vande Velde had little hope of winning the sprint.

"I knew my chances were not good at all with Fedrigo. He is really quick guy and has got a much better sprint," said Vande Velde, who wore the Giro d'Italia leader's pink jersey for a day in 2008 and was part of the Garmin-Cervelo squad that won the Tour team trial last year.

"I've never had a sprint (victory) ever," said Vande Velde, who is 36. "I've always been a slow-twitch guy. But I'm still happy with my ride. I wish there was a hill to finish it up on, but that's the way it goes."

Wiggins finished 11 minutes, 50 seconds behind Fedrigo in the main pack. The 32-year-old Team Sky leader is looking to become Britain's first winner of cycling's showcase race.

Wiggins said he and other riders were looking forward to Tuesday's rest day.

"A lot of people are tired now, mentally more than physically," he told French TV. "It was hard today nonetheless. It was quite hot. And the road was hilly."

Tour organizers said another six riders dropped out of the race, including France's Sylvain Chavanel because of illness. Brett Lancaster of Australia withdrew because of back pain from crashes in Saturday's 13th stage, his Orica-GreenEdge team said. Forty-two riders have quit, trimming the pack to 156.

Tour organizers completed their tally from Sunday's stage when tacks were thrown on the course. Race director Jean-Francois Pescheux said the 30 top riders had a total of 61 flat tires while hundreds of cars, bikes and motorcycles in the race convoy were affected. He said police are investigating.

The final time trial in the next-to-last stage and the Pyrenees climbs are likely to determine whether anyone is able to strip Wiggins of the yellow jersey before the July 22 finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

NBA ? Burks, Kanter, Evans all show growth, maturation in Orlando.

Orlando, Fla. ? Backpack on, about to exit Amway Center and leave behind the Jazz?s five-game Summer League run, Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin stole a quick glance at a high-definition television screen filled with rows of statistics.

Second-year Utah center Enes Kanter: 15 points and eight rebounds. Third-year forward Jeremy Evans: 11 points, six boards (three offensive), four blocks. Second-round pick Kevin Murphy: 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including two made 3-pointers.

Storylines

The Jazz fall 89-75 to the Thunder in their Summer League finale. Utah finishes 3-2.

? Enes Kanter leads Utah with 15 points and eight rebounds, averaging 8.8 boards in five games.

? Oklahoma City outscores the Jazz 29-10 during the fourth quarter, with Marquez Haynes and Garrett Temple combining for 16 points.

Even an off game by second-year guard Alec Burks ? eight points on 3-of-13 shooting ? was buffered by his team-leading 17.2-point average.

Corbin and the Jazz (3-2) got exactly what they wanted out of another mid-July summer swing through Orlando. Development. Progress. A promising glimpse at the future bordered by clear reminders of what young players such as Burks, Kanter, Evans and Murphy still must improve on.

Utah?s a small-market organization attempting to win now while still developing raw talent. A successful 2011-12 season proved the challenging dual approach is possible. A strong 2012 Summer League showed the Jazz?s youth is on the verge of taking the next step.

"The summer is the greatest time of year for players to improve, and young players have got to embrace the education of learning where they can get better," said assistant coach Scott Layden, who guided a Utah team that fell 89-75 to Oklahoma City on Friday in the Jazz?s Summer League finale. "Our guys have a good knowledge and perspective of who they are, so they can improve in those areas. They?re bright, intelligent guys, and they?re getting all of the tools to improve. You can see the steps they?re making to get better, and that?s what?s so encouraging."

Burks was Utah?s Summer League star. The 20-year-old slasher showed off an improved outside jump shot, while his relentless off-the-dribble attack has only accelerated. The No. 12 overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft also displayed an added swagger with the ball in his hands. He occasionally ran the Jazz?s offense, and was the focus for the majority of Utah?s sets.

Burks? defense has also intensified. Building on a strong finish to the 2011-12 season, the former Colorado standout is learning how to turn his long, steady frame into an off-the-ball advantage, and he didn?t hesitate to play tight man-to-man along the perimeter.

"Coming into the league last year, people didn?t think I could play defense, especially at this level," said Burks, who added 3.4 average rebounds in a team-high 26.8 minutes. "I?m trying to show people I?m quick enough and I?ve got long arms ? I can play defense as good as anybody if I put my mind to it."

An always-on mental attack is crucial to Kanter?s development, and he showed improved focus and intensity during games 2-5, after being bullied by Detroit rookie Andre Drummond on Monday. The No. 3 overall pick in 2011 recorded double digits in scoring during each of his final four games, and he walked off the Amway Center practice court Friday leading the Orlando Summer League in average rebounds (8.8). Kanter was the best offensive low-post player in competition, constantly turning powerful spin moves and putbacks into points.

story continues below

"Last year, I didn?t have that confidence because I didn?t play that much time," said Kanter, who averaged 26 minutes and shot 52 percent from the field. "In Summer League play, my coaches said, ?You?re going to get a lot of minutes.? ? Now, I?m just getting used to that."

Jazz general manager Kevin O?Connor, Utah?s scouting department, and Corbin watched it all. They saw Burks excel, Kanter step forward, Evans leap higher and Murphy find his rhythm after a shaky start.

For the first time in two years, Utah has a real offseason. A quiet draft was instantly replaced by a hectic free-agency period, which saw the Jazz answer overpriced signings with well-executed trades. Utah?s Summer League was strong. Now, training camp for an intriguing 2012-13 campaign awaits.

"[Our young] guys had some bright moments in this camp. ? You learn about things that you can?t replicate playing in your gymnasium at home, like playing in unusual situations, four games in five nights, back-to-back games, or games at 8 in the morning," Layden said. "And so it?s an opportunity to learn and deal with the conditions of the NBA, which are tough."

Notes ? Jazz forward DeMarre Carroll (sprained left ankle) sat out Friday?s game and was limited throughout Summer League. The fourth-year veteran averaged just 3.7 points and shot only 29.4 percent from the floor in three contests after injuring his ankle during practice last week. Carroll?s injury isn?t a concern, though, and he?ll soon resume workouts in Los Angeles. ? Ex-Westminster guard Michael Stockton played in all five games, starting two. He averaged 3.6 points and two assists in 12.8 minutes, shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 25 percent behind the 3-point line. ? Salah Mejri and Henry Sims left the Jazz?s Summer League team before Friday?s finale.

Burks makes all-summer league team

Alec Burks? name continues to grow.

The second-year Jazz guard was named Friday to the Summer League first team, joining Detroit?s Austin Daye, Orlando?s Andrew Nicholson, and Indiana?s Lance Stephenson and Miles Plumlee.

The 20-year-old Burks ranked second among all scorers in average points (17.2) and 12th in minutes (26.8), adding 3.4 rebounds and shooting 45 percent from the field in five starts.

Burks guided Utah to a 3-2 record. He poured in a game-high 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting Tuesday during the Jazz?s 84-80 win against Philadelphia.

Utah?s Enes Kanter and Jeremy Evans earned honorable mention Summer League selections.
