WHO DAT?

Wander the streets of New Orleans this week and you'd think the Saints are one of the teams playing in Sunday's Super Bowl.

Entire families are sporting Drew Brees jerseys. Women are wearing rhinestone-studded Saints T-shirts and fleur-de-lis earrings. Men are in Saints jerseys and sweatshirts.

Of course, fans in every host city show pride in their home team. But there's a special bond between the Saints and the people of New Orleans. While they're happy to welcome the Ravens and the 49ers, this city will always belong to the Saints.

THE PISTOL, EXPLAINED

You'll hear about it from the first time 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick stands behind center, and listen to it be endlessly dissected in the Super Bowl.

But just what is this pistol offense San Francisco is running?

Put simply, it's a variation of the shotgun, a formation that has been in the NFL for decades. Former Nevada coach Chris Ault invented it, and gave it the name because it reminded him of a shorter version of the shotgun.

In the pistol, the quarterback lines up 4-5 yards behind the center. Unlike the shotgun, the running backs line up behind the quarterback instead of next to him so they can be in motion when they get the ball and run north and south more easily.

The tweak that makes the pistol even more effective, though, is the read-option. This what Kaepernick runs so well, and what Baltimore has spent two weeks preparing to stop.

In the read-option, Kaepernick turns to his right and tucks the ball in the belly of his running back ? all while keeping his eyes on the defense. Based on the first move the defensive end makes ? either to the outside or toward the quarterback ? Kaepernick will either leave the ball with the running back or pull it out and take off himself to the outside.

Defensive players say the move causes problems because it forces them to hesitate a split-second to see what Kaepernick does with the ball. Often, that is just enough time for running back Frank Gore to slash up the middle or for Kaepernick to take the ball around the right end down the field for a big gain.

GET HERE EARLY

Anyone wanting a cafe au lait or a beignet from New Orleans' most famous coffee shop better be prepared to wait.

Tables were filled, and lines were stretching down the sidewalk at Cafe Du Monde by midday Saturday.

QUICKQUOTE: RAY LEWIS

There are many sides to Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

Even he admits that the guy he professes to be most of the time ? deeply religious, a caring mentor, a humble leader ? is not the one you see when he puts on his helmet and pads.

"I turn into a different person on the field," Lewis said. "I am a totally different person off the field. But on the field, I'm driven to do whatever it takes for my teammates. There are so many of my teammates here today who I've honored and told them that I would do anything in my power so we can feel that confetti drop together, because that is the ultimate. For me being a leader of this team, I owe that to them."

CULLIVER SENSITIVITY TRAINING

After playing in the Super Bowl, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is immediately starting sensitivity training.

The 24-year-old took a hit to his image this week after making anti-gay remarks to a comedian, saying he wouldn't welcome a gay player in the locker room.

Now, his public relations spokesman Theodore Palmer says Culliver will begin working with "The Trevor Project," an organization that provides crisis and suicide intervention to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

Palmer says the group wants to be sure Culliver is genuine about his words.

"It's just an opportunity for him to learn about his comments and educate himself about the LGBT community, and grow," Palmer said. "It's the first step in learning about his words."

After an educational program, Culliver is expected to then pursue volunteer work related to helping gay youth.

MCGRAW ROOTING FOR BLIND SIDE

Country music superstar Tim McGraw doesn't want to explicitly share who he's rooting for to win the Super Bowl. But he gave a pretty big hint.

"It would be nice to see Michael win and see that whole 'Blind Side' story come to completion," McGraw says.

He's referring to Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Michael Oher, whose life was the subject of the film "The Blind Side." It starred McGraw and Sandra Bullock, who won an Oscar for her role.

McGraw, whose new album, "Two Lanes of Freedom," comes out on Tuesday, was in New Orleans on Friday for a very early performance at the House of Blues broadcast live on ABC's "Good Morning America."

7 Video Marketing Tips | Internet Marketing Online Memphis

Video Marketing TipsThe power of video continues to dominate online and for this reason we wanted to share these video marketing tips for those who have not yet caught the power of using video marketing strategies.

It is not necessary to over complicate the process of using video. All it takes is a few minutes studying the larger video hosting sites like YouTube or Vimeo and others to see the types of videos that are being used. Nor does it require a huge expense.

In many cases, and when it?s all you have, your phone camera can work just fine if you have a steady hand. So, let?s examine seven video marketing tips.

Video Marketing Tips #1: Determine Your Outcome

Focus on the end goal of your video. What is it that you want it to accomplish? If you?re wanting to appear as professional as possible, then invest in a professional videographer and have them edit your videos so you look like a movie star.

However, understand that doing so will take time, much more effort and can be very expensive. For most it?s not practical to go through that time and expense. Are you an entertainment artist, musician or need to project a corporate image? Then go for it.

Video Marketing Tips #2: Communicate & Educate

For most applications on the web, you?ll want to communicate and educate your audience about you, your service or product or all of the above. People are researching information online. They want it fast.

Watching or viewing is replacing reading. It can be done passively or while engaged in some other light activity.? What needs to come across in your video marketing is someone who is real and genuine.

Video Marketing Tips#3: Add Video To Your Blog Posts

Not all videos are ?talking head? videos. While there is nothing wrong with them, also understand that you can use screen capture videos, i.e. recording? presentations, e.g. powerpoint slides.

These must first be converted to photo images by doing a save as and selecting .gif or .jpg and loading into a video editor. Or, use screen capturing software such as Jing by Techsmith.? These can be use with or without audio and they work well.

Video Marketing Tips#4 Use Public & Private Hosting Services

Videos are extremely large files. You will need a video hosting service as you create more videos. Having too many videos hosting directly on your server could prove disastrous by slowing your website down or crashing your server. This may cause you to lose sales and good will.

We recommend distributing your video marketing both on a public hosting and on a service which allows you unlimited hosting space. YouTube is the second largest search engine online.

It is excellent for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and for getting? your video indexed in Google. However Vimeo and other sites are good. When done properly your videos can be indexed in the search engines within minutes.

Amazon has developed and excellent hosting solution which allows you unlimited storage for just pennies a month.

Video Marketing Tips #5: Cross Channel Marketing

Use video across all mediums, including Social Media, online press releases, email marketing,? photo hosting sites and of course on your own website.

The fact that all media channels allow for integration of video demonstrates again how important this tool is in your overall marketing.

Product reviews, how-to processes, charts and graphs, news? updates, training and more are just some of the ways to use videos for business. Share buttons make this a snap.

Video Marketing Tips #6: Repurpose Existing Content

For most video marketing applications, if you already have content, there is no need to create new content to begin with. You can start with existing content by repurposing what you already have.

Turn your articles into video presentations. You can do the same with your audio podcasts. There is really no end to it.

Video Marketing Tips #7 Use A Professional Video Marketing Tool

If you want the Rolls Royce of video marketing software tools, the best I?ve seen yet is Easy Video Player. It is a video marketing software built by marketers for marketers. And, they keep enhancing and updating it with new cutting edge features. Here a few:

  • Build and maintain lists on autopilot
  • Hosting on Amazon S3
  • Track all videos from all sites on one dashboard panel
  • Fully compatible with latest technology.
  • Embed opt-in forms right inside videos
  • Sharing tools for Facebook, Twitter, Digg, etc.

There are many more features and benefits. It is very reasonably priced and will pay for itself a 1000 times over if you use it. Again you can check out Easy Video Player here.

We hope these video marketing tips have been a helpful resource.

How recess (appointments) became a little less fun

If you ask any kid on the playground to define ?recess,? she?ll probably tell you that it?s the best time of the day. And for some presidents, recess has been met with as much relish. But that sentiment may now be in doubt, at least as far as presidents go. Because the definition of recess, it turns out, isn?t so clear.

Image via Wikimedia Commons.

Image via Wikimedia Commons.

No one needs to explain why a lunchtime recess at school is great. But as for what makes it great for the president, you?ll need to know a little background.

Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution grants the president power to nominate individuals to certain high-level positions in the federal government?but each nominee must be approved by two-thirds of the Senate.

There are about a thousand positions in the administration for which Senate confirmation is required, including all of the 15 Cabinet members who head executive departments, the heads of regulatory agencies (like the Environmental Protection Agency), ambassadors, Supreme Court justices and other federal judges, U.S. attorneys, U.S. marshals, deputy secretaries, undersecretaries, and assistant secretaries.

That?s a lot of people for the Senate to confirm. In addition to the sheer quantity, in the past few decades the Senate confirmation process has become increasingly contentious, with even lower-level nominations struggling through prolonged partisan battles.

But here?s why recess period is so much fun for the president, even if there is no swing set involved: Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution says that ?[t]he President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.?

That means that the president doesn?t need to get Senate confirmation if he nominates someone when the Senate is recessed.

The tricky part is how to define a Senate recess. That?s what a recent federal court ruled on in a case about a handful of recess appointments by President Barack Obama.

In January 2012, President Obama appointed three members of the National Labor Relations Board when the Congress was on extended break for the winter holidays. Fearing that the president would attempt to make recess appointments, Republicans banged the gavel and officially opened a session for a few minutes every three days. The president argued that these sessions were simply a sham to cover what was actually a recess.

These sessions, which are called ?pro forma sessions? (from Latin, meaning ?as a matter of form?), are a recent development. They are typically brief, often lasting mere minutes and consisting of only a few senators or representatives, and held simply to avoid a recess and thus prevent any presidential recess appointments.

On January 25, a three-judge panel of the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia was asked to consider the matter of whether the appointment of the three National Labor Relations Board was, in fact, a recess appointment and therefore not in need of Senate confirmation. The panel unanimously decided that the president did not have constitutional authority to make those appointments without confirmation. The court further stated, ?Considering the text, history, and structure of the Constitution, these appointments were invalid from their inception.?

As you can imagine, the president strongly disagrees with the decision. White House press secretary Jay Carney said of the decision, ?The decision is novel and unprecedented. ? It contradicts 150 years of practice by Democratic and Republican administrations.?

The case will likely go to the United States Supreme Court. If you were the court, how would you define a ?recess? by the Senate? And what should happen to the decisions made by the three-panel members during the year that they were in their positions while this case played out in court?

This case may not be as much fun as an hour on the monkey bars, but it is certainly a lot of fun for constitutional law lovers to watch unfold.

OnBlog: Things to come in 2013

Our Director of Client Services, Jacek Rolnik, recently took some time from his busy schedule to talk about some of the challenges Onboard faces in 2013, as well as some of the things we are doing to improve our products and services.

Jacek Rolnik, Director of Client Services

What is Onboard?s client focus for 2013?

I think if I had to summarize our focus for the year in a few words, it would be ?back to basics.? This year we will continue to focus a lot of our energy on improving our core products, systems, and processing ? which includes adding in-house resources as well as better aligning tasks and functions with internal skill sets. This includes my team. We we also be enhancing our core data offerings by expanding coverage, increasing fill rates, and improving overall quality. The end goal is to provide exceptional service and experience and the most ?bang for the buck? for our clients.

What trends are we seeing in the marketplace?

I think real estate is ready to do great business again. I see companies across the board ready to compete and innovate like they did in the past. The ?online? real estate experience has changed greatly since we came onto the scene 10 years ago. Where it was previously limited to the website, it now includes an increasingly diverse set of touch-points connecting consumers and real estate companies and professionals. Today, these touch-points consist of websites, portals, tablet and mobile apps, social tools, CRM and lead gen tools, and much more. Consumers want ? and expect ? to see a similar experience across these channels. At present, I think the real estate industry by and large struggles to effectively deliver a multi-platform, consistent, and compelling brand experience to consumers. I think this is a huge opportunity for our clients and for Onboard. A recent NAR and Google report suggested that now nearly 90% of home shoppers use mobile search for their research and decision making process.

What is Onboard doing now to improve internal processes and content issues?

As I mentioned earlier, a key focus this year will be improving our core content, systems, and data processing. It?s no secret that we?ve experienced some challenges in recent months in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, a major data center move, and other compounding factors. We are definitely getting back on track and improving things along the way ? reexamining some internal processes ? and in some cases, tearing things down and starting over. We are also building in additional standardization, automation, and quality assurance measures, which we are confident will immensely improve the overall service and value we deliver to our customers. I?m confident in the direction we are going.

NY Times says Chinese hacked paper's computers

BEIJING (AP) ? Chinese hackers repeatedly penetrated The New York Times' computer systems over the past four months, stealing reporters' passwords and hunting for files on an investigation into the wealth amassed by the family of a top Chinese leader, the newspaper reported Thursday.

Security experts hired to investigate and plug the breach found that the attacks used tactics similar to ones used in previous hacking incidents traced to China, the report said. It said the hackers routed the attacks through computers at U.S. universities, installed a strain of malicious software, or malware, associated with Chinese hackers and initiated the attacks from university computers previously used by the Chinese military to attack U.S. military contractors.

The attacks, which began in mid-September, coincided with a Times investigation into how the relatives and family of Premier Wen Jiabao built a fortune worth over $2 billion. The report, which was posted online Oct. 25, embarrassed the Communist Party leadership, coming ahead of a fraught transition to new leaders and exposing deep-seated favoritism at a time when many Chinese are upset about a wealth gap.

Over the months of cyber-incursions, the hackers eventually lifted the computer passwords of all Times employees and used them to get into the personal computers of 53 employees.

The report said none of the Times' customer data was compromised and that information about the investigation into the Wen family remained protected, though it left unclear what data or communications the infiltrators accessed.

"Computer security experts found no evidence that sensitive e-mails or files from the reporting of our articles about the Wen family were accessed, downloaded or copied," the report quoted executive editor Jill Abramson as saying. A Times spokeswoman declined to comment further.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman called the Times' accusations groundless and reiterated the government's position that China also has been hacked repeatedly.

"To rashly jump to conclusions based on investigation results which have not been proved by evidence is totally irresponsible behavior," the spokesman, Hong Lei, said at a routine daily media briefing. "China is also a victim of cyber-attacks. Chinese laws specifically stipulate that cyber-attacks are prohibited."

The Chinese Defense Ministry asked for questions to be submitted in writing but initially declined comment.

The Times, in its report, quoted the Defense Ministry as saying that Chinese law prohibits hacking and other acts that damage Internet security and that accusing it of "cyber-attacks without solid proof is unprofessional and baseless."

China has been accused by the U.S., other foreign governments and computer security experts of mounting a widespread, aggressive cyber-spying campaign for several years, trying to steal classified information and corporate secrets and to intimidate critics. Foreign reporters and news media, including The Associated Press, have been among the targets of attacks intended to uncover the identities of sources for news stories and to stifle critical reports about the Chinese government.

"Attacks on journalists based in China are increasingly aggressive, disruptive and sophisticated," said Greg Walton, a cyber-security researcher who has tracked Chinese hacking campaigns. China's cyber-spying efforts have excelled in part because of the government's "willingness to ignore international norms relating to civil society and media organizations," he said.

The Times reported that executives became concerned just before the publication of the Wen investigation after learning that Chinese officials had warned of unspecified consequences. Soon after the Oct. 25 publication, AT&T, which monitors the Times' computer networks, notified the company about activity consistent with a hacking attack, the report said.

After months of investigation by the computer security firm Mandiant, experts are still unsure how the hackers initially infiltrated the Times' computer systems, the report said.
