Economists cut Brazil price view for 5th week (Reuters)

SAO PAULO (Reuters) ? Economists trimmed forecasts for Brazil's inflation rate for 2012 for a fifth week, after estimating that consumer prices last year topped the official target for the first time since 2003, a central bank weekly survey showed on Monday.

Estimates for 2012 inflation, as measured by changes in the benchmark IPCA consumer price index, edged down to 5.32 percent in the week ended December 30 - the lowest level in more than three months - from a prior 5.33 percent, according to the bank's Focus survey. Policymakers expect inflation to finish 2012 within the official 2.5 to 6.5 percent target range.

According to the survey, estimates showed that inflation ended 2011 at 6.55 percent, above the bank's 6.5 percent target range ceiling. Last year is expected to have been the first since 2003 that policymakers missed the target, according to the central bank.

The central bank recently calculated a 54 percent probability of missing its inflation target in 2011. Policymakers expect inflation at 4.7 percent in 2012. [ID:nL1E7NM0IY]

The government is scheduled to release inflation data for the month of December and all of 2011 on Friday.

A deteriorating global economy is helping ease price pressures and cooling prospects for Brazil's economic expansion, the survey showed. Growth forecasts for 2012 declined to 3.30 percent, while that for 2011 ended at 2.87 percent.

Brazil's economy expanded 7.5 percent in 2010, the fastest pace in 24 years.

According to the survey, economists forecast the benchmark Selic interest rate at 9.50 percent by the end of 2012, maintaining their outlook from the week before. The Selic ended 2011 at 11 percent.

The Focus survey is published on a weekly basis by the central bank, which polls more than 100 financial institutions on their 12- and 24-month predictions for the most relevant economic indicators in the country.

Parting Schotts: MSG, MSG Plus listings on hold in 'Sports On The Air'

With the ongoing dispute between Time Warner Cable and MSG Network, we have decided that we will not put the MSG and MSG Plus listings in the "Sports On The Air" section of the Scoreboard page.

This doesn't mean we are supporting TWC. We just don't want to lead TWC subscribers into that the channels are still on the system. And we do know there are subscribers to DirecTV and DISH Network.

Hopefully, the dispute will be resolved soon.

In the meantime, TWC has placed NBA TV on the vacated MSG channel (54 on standard definition and 1847 on high definition).

Arab League says Syria withdrew tanks from cities (AP)

CAIRO ? The Arab League chief says Syria's regime has withdrawn heavy weapons from inside cities and freed about 3,500 prisoners.

But Nabil Elaraby told a news conference Monday that security forces have not stopped shooting protesters and the regime's snipers continue to operate, even with Arab League monitors working in the country.

Elaraby also called on the opposition and ordinary Syrians to aid the observers by sending them names of relatives or friends they think are detained.

At least 150 people have been killed since the observers began their mission last Tuesday to verify the compliance of President Bashar Assad's regime with an Arab League peace plan aimed at ending the regime's 9-month-old crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Rodman to Coach New Topless Basketball Team

We?re not sure what?s going to feel ickier, the fact that Dennis Rodman is going to be holding tryouts for a topless women?s basketball team in New York City, or you after you finish reading the post. But the Basketball Hall of Famer will be trying out and coaching a team fielding exotic dancers from Headquarters Gentleman Club, in hopes of cobbling together a charity game against what appears to be another topless women?s basketball from a rival club.

Duty calls, apparently, for Rodman. As it does here at Ball Don?t Lie. Gross.

Here?s the lowdown:

The NBA bad boy dreamed up the team after hearing that rival strip joint Rick?s Cabaret launched a league with former Atlanta Hawk Spud Webb, who runs the Texas Legends, an NBA Development League team.

Rodman even is challenging Rick?s Cabaret?s topless team to a charity game.

?I don?t know too many men that don?t like a good-looking woman running up and down around the court,? Rodman said.

MARILYN HAGERTY: Winter wedding has tinges of red and green farm machinery

He farms with red Case I-H machinery. Her dad uses only green John Deere.

But Fallon Hoverson and Taylor Petsinger, who will marry this evening have set the red and green question aside. Their wedding will be done in tones of silver and ivory. Sort of a winter wonderland theme.

Four nieces who are flower girls and three nephews who are ring bearers will come down the aisle of Calvary Lutheran Church on an oak sleigh ? one with wheels rather than runners.

After they exchange their vows before Pastor Roger Dykstra, Taylor and Fallon will hold their wedding reception in the Alerus Center. She has finished medical school and is a family medicine resident physician at Altru. He and his family farm near Arvilla, N.D. Her father farms near Larimore, N.D. And the two fathers are longtime friends.

Deborah Hoverson wonders what will happen if her daughter and son-in-law are blessed with a new generation of farmers. What color, she ponders, will be seen tilling their fields? They all agree it doesn?t really matter, but it provides for plenty of good natured banter.

Ask Marilyn

Q. Is there still time to see Christmas in the Park displays in Lincoln Park?

A. Yes, the holiday lights will be glittering tonight and New Year?s Eve. So far this season, there had been 2,600 vehicles through the park. That?s more than ever, according to Roger Johnson of the sponsoring Lions Clubs. He says there have been a few buses, but it?s mostly cars. The cost is $5 for a carload of people, $10 for limos and $20 for buses. There are 48 lighted displays and one synchronized to music at the end of the tour that makes for a grand finale.

Q. what was the best game of the week around here?

A. Trying out new snow blowers on the inch or so of snow that came floating down late in the week.
