Sir Steve Redgrave: London may not have to ... - BBC World News

Sir Steve Redgrave believes London could host the Olympic Games again sooner than expected. The Olympic opening ceremony kick-started a hugely successful Games (Picture: Getty) The former rower says he has spoken to International Olympic Committee members, who were impressed with London?s performance so far. He said: ?They?re blown away. I know I?m biased but I?ve spoken to a number of IOC members who have seen there have been no empty seats after the first few days and 80,000 people in the stadium, even for the morning sessions of athletics. Sir Chris Hoy has overtaken Sir Steve Redgrave as Britain?s most successful Olympian (Picture: Getty) ?We keep hearing the Games may not return in our lifetime but the IOC might want us to bid again soon.? Redgrave, who won five Olympic gold medals between 1984 and 2000, believes Great Britain?s passion for sport of any variety has been shown at the London Olympics. The Games played host to a number of sports whose following is marginal at best in this country but venues were for the most part full, with support for Team GB passionate and unwavering. Redgrave, who was Britain?s most successful Olympian until Sir Chris Hoy won his sixth gold medal last week, admits he is proud of how well supported all sports have been. ?It just shows that we will watch anything,? said the 50-year-old. ?I watched Neil Adams in judo in Seoul in 1988 after I had finished competing myself and once the Korean guy had lost, the whole place emptied.? Redgrave also believes the man who took his title as Britain?s most successful Olympian, cyclist Hoy, may yet carry on until 2016. ?He says it?s his last Games but we?ll see,? Redgrave said.
