Amanda Nixon: How Breast Cancer Made Me a Yogini

When I entered my first yoga class a few years ago, I never thought in my wildest dreams that one day I would aspire to be a yoga instructor. I distinctly remember my response to my first yoga class: nervous, uncomfortable, and worried I wouldn't be able to accomplish the complex moves. To my surprise, I was immediately calmed by the encouragement and compassion I received from the teacher, who, like me, is a breast cancer survivor.

My entire life I thought yoga was for smelly hippies, fitness buffs, and pretzel-like flexible people. Eww! Gross! I steered clear of those types and assumed I wasn't fit enough to give yoga a whirl myself. But today, I am proud to tell you I am well on my way to receiving my yoga teacher certification.

At the age of 27, I was diagnosed with an extremely rare, aggressive form of breast cancer called Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). Immediately following my diagnosis, my life became a whirlwind of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, a mastectomy and reconstructive surgeries. As a result of my surgeries (and flying on airplanes) I developed a condition called Lymphedema that causes my hand and arm to swell. I desperately needed something to improve not just my body, but my mind and spirit too. My mom and my boss recommended I try yoga.

It wasn't until I stepped foot into my first Cancer Therapy Yoga class that something clicked. Here I was, able to reconnect with my body and focus my mind, surrounded by other beautiful breast cancer survivors. The class was fun, restorative, and gentle enough for beginners. I was in a safe place where I felt accepted, supported, and loved. From then on, I was hooked.

There are numerous studies to support the benefits of exercise and yoga for cancer patients, and I am proof of these. Yoga has helped me manage stress, improve my sleep and digestion, increase my range of motion, reduce pain, and most importantly, stay healthy (aka help avoid a recurrence of breast cancer).

As a firm believer in the power of yoga to fight breast cancer, I recommend the practice to the hundreds of breast cancer survivors I support in my role as survivor outreach advocate at Keep A Breast. Claire Petretti, my yoga for cancer recovery teacher, developed a video to help cancer patients recover from their surgeries and journeys. My appearance in the DVD is an example of my commitment to helping others access yoga even if they are not physically capable of leaving their homes.

During my transition from yoga newbie to yoga teacher, I have had a few key realizations:

1. I love dating my mat. I have a date with my yoga mat each day. My yoga mat would never ask me to "go Dutch" or take me for a "long walk on the beach." All my yoga mat wants to do is support me. Yoga is a personal practice, and I have the opportunity to do whatever work I need each day. This might mean mediation or deep breathing or forward bends or grounding poses. I am my own best teacher.

2. Yoga offers a sense of belonging and unity. Looking around at all of the other teacher trainees, I see a vast range of goals, strength, aspirations, and dreams. My personal goal is to work with breast cancer patients, but we all come to practice, learn, teach, and accept each other as we are. My experiences with breast cancer surgeries and classes are simply my unique contributions.

3. You can smile in yoga postures. Yoga is fun. After a few days of Yoga Vitality and Yoga Delight, or, as I adorningly call them, Tough Yoga classes, I realized how trying to keep up with everyone else caused tension. I decided to ease up. Pay attention to my breathing. Accept myself. I did not need to speed through, compete, or feel inadequate -- that would be counterproductive. I decided to smile instead. This may have turned into a full-blown laugh at times, but just smiling helped me loosen up. I ended up carrying this smile with me throughout the day, which happens to be a fun side effect.

4. We are perfect just the way we are. Each day, each person feels different. I love to be able to reconnect myself to my body. I have had four breast surgeries and surgery to remove my stomach tissue and muscle. My body has a pretty interesting story to tell. Some days it is shouting that narrative, other days whispering it to me. I need to tune in and turn up the volume. Connect with my body. Love my body. Love my boobies. Yoga allows this. Yoga is about easing suffering and accepting self.

5. Yoga on the mat is just as important as yoga off the mat. Since I started teacher training I have a greater awareness of those around me, and how connected we are. Goodness is our true nature, so why not be as good as I can? Speak with yoga lips and see with yoga eyes. We are all pretty awesome people. Yoga has helped me tune in to the important stuff among all the insignificant. I've caught myself thinking, "Is this gossipy?" and "Is this helpful?" more than ever before. I now try to leave the lightest footprint by purchasing only what I really need. I aspire to live my yoga each day.

Namaste,

Amanda Nixon

Connecticut Conference of Municipalities: Towns Too Dependent on ...

?

Connecticut?s 169 municipalities have gotten little increased financial help from the state in the last five years and remain overly dependent on state aid, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities says.

CCM, the main lobbying group for local communities, released a bulletin Monday to candidates for the state?s General Assembly urging them to make education funding a priority in the coming year, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

State aid for towns stands at about $3 billion per year, while Connecticut?s 169 towns collectively raise about $9 billion annually from local property taxes, James Finley, CCM?s executive director, told the Mirror.

State aid to towns has remained relatively flat over the last five years. When you factor in the rate of inflation, that means towns have actually lost financial ground during that five-year period, Finley added.

The state aid figures represent an over-dependence by towns on local property taxes, something the General Assembly should address by closing shortfalls in education funding to towns, Finley said.

"The key to property tax relief is education finance reform," Finley told the Mirror. "The overdependence on the property tax is unsustainable, and hometown Connecticut is in desperate need of revenue assistance."

Many GOP Operatives Conceding Ohio

September 29, 2012

Walter Shapiro: "Many of the well-known Ohio Republicans I interviewed offered their blunt assessments only after they were guaranteed complete anonymity. That is often the Faustian bargain of political journalism in 2012: robotic talking points on the record or something resembling honesty with no names attached. The reason, though, that I am emphasizing the don't-quote-me part of the equation is that I was stunned by the vehemence of the thumbs-down-on-Mitt verdict. All but conceding the state to Obama, these Republicans were offering what may be the biggest rejection of Ohio since Philip Roth wrote Goodbye Columbus."

Tornado hits Spanish fair, flood deaths reach 10

Last Updated 11:04 a.m. ET

BARCELONA, Spain A tornado swept through a fair ground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said that a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started on Friday morning are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

US stock futures head lower on Spain worries

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stock futures are down as investors fret over the economy of Spain, which this week announced big spending cuts it hopes will convince potential bailout creditors and investors that it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances.

Dow futures are down 49 points to 13,365. The broader S&P 500 futures are down 5 points to 1,436. Nasdaq futures are down 8 points to 2,807.

The positive momentum generated by Thursday's Spanish budget has ground to a halt as investors await more news, including stress test results into 14 banks due after European markets close. The Moody's rating agency is also expected to weigh in on Spain's creditworthiness.

Investors will also be looking at a U.S. report on August consumer spending, due at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

abc two legged pups dm 120927 wblog Two Legged Puppies Almost Unaffected by Disability

CBS DFW

Moose and Maverick are typical rambunctious puppies. They like to play, bark and lick as much as the next dog. They?re thriving even though they both have only two legs.

The puppies were abandoned in March, just hours after they were born. The local rescue coordinator called Dr. Erin Shults, a veterinarian in Frisco, Texas who heads a non-profit animal welfare organization called Mazie?s Mission.

?I got the call that someone had dumped a mother and three babies. Two of them only had two legs,? Shults said. ?I wasn?t really sure then that the two-legged dogs would survive or have a good quality of life, but I was willing to give it a shot.?

Shults took the pair of two-legged pups in as her personal pets and began training them to work as therapy dogs, going to shelters and assisted living centers to visit patients.

?They?ve done a lot of therapy and they?ve been just great with that,? Shults said. ?They are such fantastic therapy dogs.?

So well that most people they visit don?t even realize Moose and Maverick only have two legs.

?When I take them to assisted living centers, people don?t even notice right away since they act so normal,? Shults said. ?People don?t even realize. I mean, they?re both completely mobile and you can?t even tell when they?re sitting in someone?s lap.?

Moose and Maverick even walk like other dogs, as if they had all four legs.

?I always say it?s like they?re walking like a kangaroo or a T. rex,? Shults said. ?They barely get off the ground.?

Shults had wondered how they would do.

?I was thinking I?d have to teach them to walk on their back legs, like humans. I thought they?d just slide on their stomachs if not. But I was wrong?way wrong, ? Shults said. ?They are very content moving that way so I?m not going to press them. I?m letting them walk how they want to.?

Shults says Moose and Maverick, like other dogs, have their own distinct personalities.

?Moose is very laid back. He?s very calm and just wants to hang out and sit on your lap,? she said. ?While Maverick is very active. He?s?mischievous?and likes to get in trouble. They?re polar opposites.?

Shults is hoping that the pair can use their disability to inspire others.

?I?m trying to get them to be therapy dogs for amputees,? she said. ?They?d be able to teach people. They have no idea they?re different from other dogs. Nothing gets them down.?

6 Signs Your Relationship Is Heading Toward Marriage

You love him. He loves you. You feel like he?s the one. So how do you know if you?re moving toward marriage? These six indicators should clue you in.

You talk about a specific future that involves each other.

Sure, you two have mentioned that you both want kids, one of the things you must know about each other before you get engaged, but have you gone into more detail?

When your boyfriend says to you, ?I?d like to have kids a few years after you finish your master?s,? he?s talking about a future with you, and not just some great beyond where he has a theoretical wife with whom he can make babies.

You speak in ?when?s, not ?if?s.

If your guy starts sentences with, ?When we get married,? he?s made up his mind: He wants you to be his wife. You may not get engaged the next day, or even the next year, but if your relationship stays on its current trajectory after a statement like that, your marriage will have that man in it.

It?s not weird to talk about your one-day wedding.

Similarly, when marriage is a foregone conclusion, you don?t feel funny letting him know that you read Save the Date every day or that you must have peonies at your wedding.

It?s a very good sign if he?s talking about your wedding, too, but don?t worry if he?s not?as long as he?s happy to hear you chat about it, you?re in good shape.

You?re each considered a part of the other?s family.

Your boyfriend?s whole family is going on vacation. If you?re heading toward marriage, it wouldn?t be so crazy if they invited you to join (though if you?re not invited, it doesn?t mean you?re not going to marry your guy?I wasn?t included in Paul?s giant family cruise?seven years into dating him). Or if you?re all going out for your mom?s birthday, there?s no question (in your parents? mind, yours, or your boyfriend?s) that he?s coming along.

Your friends think of him as their friend, and his buddies consider you their buddy, too.

No worries if you each have a pal or two the other can?t stand. For the most part, though, your guy should be in with your friends and you should be down with his. This is crucial because neither of you should have to give up friendships during marriage, and it?s so much easier to maintain those relationships if you each get along with the other?s crew.

You can picture yourselves standing together at the altar.

A good friend of mine had been dating a guy for about a year-and-a-half when she confessed to me that when she envisioned her wedding day, she couldn?t imagine her current boyfriend there. That was telling. If you can?t get your mind to a ceremony with your man, there?s no way you?ll get your body there. (They broke up, and about two years later, she?s engaged to someone else with whom she was easily able to picture herself exchanging vows!)

Are there other signs (besides finding an engagement ring) that you think mean you?re headed toward marriage? How many of the above indicators have you seen in your relationship? Has he ever flat-out said he wants to marry you someday?

Mormon website editor's church discipline hearing suspended

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - The Florida-based editor of a Mormon-themed website facing disciplinary action and possible excommunication over his writings said on Thursday his Orlando-area church leaders had suspended a hearing to decide his fate.

David Twede's posts on MormonThink.com offer his account of the history of the church's political involvement, criticism of fellow Mormon and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and the author's take on Mormon beliefs about the nature of God and temple ceremonies.

Twede, a 47-year-old, fifth-generation Mormon and MormonThink.com's managing editor, has said that church leaders had accused him of apostasy and described his recent posts as anti-Mormon. A disciplinary hearing had been set for Sunday.

But Twede told Reuters by email that he was later informed by a senior church official that the hearing before 15 regional leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had been postponed.

"He emailed me and simply said they they couldn't hold the court and would possibly reschedule later, " Twede said. "They will let me know."

Mormon Church disciplinary decision are made at the local level and outcomes can include probation, disfellowship, excommunication or exoneration. Public excommunications are rare. But several high-profile scholars and feminists had their memberships revoked in the 1990s.

Excommunicated persons can still attend church, but cannot receive the sacrament, hold church callings, speak at services or enter Mormon temples.

Twede's possible discipline has drawn national media attention, something that could have prompted the church to back down, said Grant Palmer, a Utah-based author and Mormon historian, who was disciplined by the church in 2004.

ATTENTION ON MORMON FAITH

That's particularly true since Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney, whom Twede has criticized, is also Mormon, ramping up the amount of attention placed on Mormon beliefs and practice, Palmer said.

"If I were a betting man, I would say yes, this is probably at work in the David Twede situation," said Palmer, who resigned from the church two years ago when facing his own excommunication hearing.

In a statement released through the Utah-based church's public relations office, the senior official said the postponement was "due to a scheduling conflict" and would be rescheduled.

The church has declined to comment specifically on Twede or his blog, saying disciplinary matters were confidential. Church spokesman Michael Purdy said last week it would be "patently false" to suggest a Mormon would face discipline for having questions about their faith or for expressing political views.

"The church is an advocate of individual choice. It is a core tenet of our faith," Purdy said. "Church discipline becomes necessary only in those rare occasions when an individual's actions cannot be ignored while they claim to be in good standing with the church."

Founded about eight years ago, MormonThink.org aims to explore aspects of Mormon history, belief and culture. Its writers include current and former church members, Twede said.

Palmer said the site's growing influence maybe be an issue, saying that with the interest in Mormonism on the rise, monthly hits grew to a million in July, and have since surged further.

"I guess the leadership doesn't like having any of this out there in public," Palmer said.

Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A federal judge on Thursday ordered a California man behind a crudely produced anti-Islamic video that inflamed parts of the Middle East to be detained because he is a flight risk.

U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal said Nakoula Basseley Nakoula should be held after officials said he violated his probation term for a 2010 check fraud conviction.

A federal prosecutor said Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

A 14-minute trailer for the film "Innocence of Muslims" was posted on YouTube in July, leading to protests around the Middle East. The trailer depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester.

The violence broke out Sept. 11 and has spread since, killing dozens. Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer.

In court Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said Nakoula was flight risk based on a "lengthy pattern of deception."

"He has every incentive to disappear," Dugdale said.

Nakoula, 55, was handcuffed and shackled in court.

The full story about Nakoula and the video still isn't known.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile called media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

A film permit listed Media for Christ, a Los Angeles-area charity run by other Egyptian Christians, as the production company. Most of the film was made at the charity's headquarters. Steve Klein, an insurance agent in Hemet and outspoken Muslim critic, has said he was a consultant and promoter for the film.

The trailer still can be found on YouTube. The Obama administration asked Google, YouTube's parent, to take down the video. But the company has refused, saying it did not violate its content standards.

Meanwhile, a number of actors and workers on the film have come forward to say they were tricked. They say they were hired for a film titled "Desert Warrior" and there was no mention of Islam or Muhammad in the script. Those references were dubbed in after filming was completed.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia has sued to get the trailer taken down, saying she was duped.

Longer exercise can cut child's risk of diabetes | Sify Health

Twenty minutes of vigorous exercise daily over just three months, can reduce a child?s risk of diabetes as well as his total body fat ? including dangerous, deep abdominal fat, researchers have said.

?If exercise is good for you, then more exercise ought to be better for you and that is what we found for most of our outcomes,? Dr. Catherine Davis, clinical health psychologist at the Institute of Public and Preventive Health at Georgia Health Sciences University, Twenty minutes.

Pediatric and adult studies have shown the metabolic benefits of aerobic activity, but had yet to dissect differences in the dose response, or the amount of activity needed to elicit a given benefit.

The study looked at 222 overweight, previously inactive 7 to 11-year olds in the Augusta, Georgia, area and found more is better.

All you need to know about juvenile diabetes

?Obesity is a growing public health crisis that is affecting youth throughout the United States, and we know that obesity can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes,? Dr. Michael Lauer, Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Division of Cardiovascular Sciences of the National Institute of Health, said.

?This research adds to the body of evidence that physical activity improves children?s health, that longer periods of exercise provide a greater benefit and that increased physical activity among overweight and obese children could stave off the onset of type 2 diabetes,? he added.

A third of the study participants maintained their typically sedentary lifestyle; a third began a 20-minute heart-rate-raising, after-school exercise routine for three months; and a third exercised for 40 minutes after school.

While their primary focus was insulin resistance, a risk factor for diabetes, the researchers also measured total body fat, visceral fat and aerobic fitness over the study?s course.

Children who exercised for 40 minutes had a 22 percent reduction in insulin resistance versus the controls, while the 20-minute group experienced an 18 percent reduction, study?s lead author, Davis said.

How to boost your child?s immunity

The extra 20 minutes also helped the children lose more total body fat and visceral fat while fitness, which appeared driven by intensity rather than duration, gained a similar boost from both time periods.

The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Obama says Romney has 'newfound outrage' on China

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama is accusing Republican Mitt Romney of showing "newfound outrage" on cracking down on China, saying his rival's approach is "just not credible."

Speaking in Ohio, Obama says that Romney's approach, quote, "feels like that fox saying, 'you know we need more secure chicken coops.' It's just not credible." The president is also charging Romney with profiting from companies that shipped jobs to China.

Obama and Romney are both in Ohio, where they have tangled over which man would best prevent manufacturing jobs from being shipped to China. Romney has said he would tag the Asian powerhouse as a currency manipulator.

Obama's campaign says the president has brought more trade cases against China in one term than President George W. Bush did in two.

Virgin America Announces 2nd Quarter 2012 Results ? Civil ...

Quoting ROSWELL41 (Thread starter):
VX has posted a $4 million loss for the quarter. Unfortunate for what is supposed to be one of the strongest quarters of the year for airlines in general.

Very disappointing considering that even bankrupt AMR posted an operating profit and a better net margin -- even including bankruptcy reorganization expenses!

Load factor was down 3.2 points year-over-year and RASM declined 2 percent even as peer JetBlue's RASM increased 6 percent with a load factor increase of 3.8 points. The decrease in CASM was almost entirely attributable to lower fuel costs and longer average stage length.

The exit scenario for Branson and the "U.S. investors" is an IPO, but these numbers won't support an IPO in the next 12 months unless Q3 is a complete blow-out -- and I don't think the macroeconomic environment supports that.

This would support the rumor that investors are losing patience. The key metrics are headed in the wrong direction. VX caters too much to the price sensitive customer looking for an exciting experience and not the loyal business traveler expecting first class upgrades etc.

The long stage length of flights isn't helping either. Best of luck but I don't see VX having a bright future in this form.

Another fantastic quarter I dont see how that model can work in this economy?
I love the spin...$4M....

Now if we dig slightly deeper and don't read the Virgin America corporate koolaid and we look at the REAL numbers....Another $31M loss for the quarter...up $10M from last year. And for the year....$107M loss....just ever so slightly above their $66M loss a year before.

People, these are not good numbers.

But there is nothing to see here...Doing great...Keep on keepin' on.

Quoting SuperDash (Reply 4):
But there is nothing to see here...Doing great...Keep on keepin' on.

If AMR can turn it around, VX can turn it around too!?

While I detest Virgin America and its old school 1800's robber baron style origin story, i will grant them that showing an operational profit is the first key to sucess. Won't keep you alive, but that "$4M" is atleast close...

You are right though, investors will want to see much more from a company as small and as middle aged as Virgin America has become. Can't play the startup card anymore with the money folks, yet its not a large established airline that shaving a few % here and there can suddenly start putting hundreds of millions in the bank.

I think the doomsayers are just loving this but you dont invest in the airline business expecting short term return. VX is clearly on a 10 year model and i think they are progressing nicely. All figures point to getting closer to their goal each time.

The PRESS RELEASE is just that but theres alot more to the VX story than what the posters above have detracted from it so i feel the entire post needs to be visible.

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Virgin America today reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2012. Total operating revenue for the second quarter grew by 29 percent to $347 million on a capacity increase of 32 percent. The Company narrowed its operating loss to $4 million for the second quarter, and improved earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization, and aircraft rental expense (EBITDAR) by 44 percent, to a record high of $54 million. EBITDAR margin for the second quarter rose to 16 percent, a 1.7 point year-over-year improvement. Year-to-date Virgin America reported total revenue of $614 million ? a 31 percent increase year-over-year. Operating loss for the six months ended June 30, 2012, was $53 million. Year-to-date the Company has achieved EBITDAR of $61 million, an improvement of 23 percent over the first six months of 2011.

In the second year of an unprecedented capacity growth cycle, Virgin America's unit revenue (RASM) declined a modest 2 percent as compared to the second quarter of 2011. Over the past two years, the airline has increased available seat miles (ASM) by 72 percent with an 11 percent increase in RASM. The Company took delivery of one aircraft during the second quarter, ending the quarter with a total fleet of 52 Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The airline has taken delivery of 24 aircraft total since the first quarter of 2010. This rapid growth established Virgin America's core network and provided an important base for the carrier's future success. This phase of accelerated growth is now largely complete, as Virgin America will take delivery of just one additional aircraft through the second quarter of 2013.

Cost per available seat mile (CASM) excluding fuel decreased by 1.5 percent, despite the cost pressures of growth, reflecting the benefits of economies of scale that Virgin America will see as growth slows. Fuel costs during the quarter averaged $3.40 per gallon ? a decrease of 3.4 percent year-over-year, although the quarter was still one of the highest cost periods in Virgin America's history. Virgin America maintains a hedging program to manage the volatility of fuel prices and provide some protection from short-term price increases. As of June 30, the Company has hedged 58 percent of its expected fuel consumption for the rest of 2012, and 30 percent for the first half of 2013.

"With improved margins in the second quarter, our investment in building our network over the past two years is beginning to pay off," said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush. "Despite the economic climate and the historic rise in fuel costs faced since our launch, as a new carrier we needed to grow. After two years of record expansion, we're pleased to have built a strong foundation and to have delivered on our promise of offering the best product in the domestic skies. With just one aircraft delivery in the next twelve months, we will focus on maximizing the value of our network instead of managing additional growth. As we enter this period of slower growth, we expect the investment in our core network to continue to provide improved financial results."

In the 12 months ending in June 2012, Virgin America launched new service to Puerto Vallarta, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, and Portland. Since its 2007 launch, the airline has created 2,600 new jobs, expanded to 19 airport destinations, signed up 2.5 million Elevate? members and swept the reader-based travel awards, including "Best Domestic Airline" in Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards and Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards. As one of the few expanding U.S. airlines, Virgin America grew by 513 teammates year-over-year for the quarter.

Top Line Second Quarter Reporting Highlights:

Operating results: The airline reported an operating loss of $4 million in the second quarter on revenues of $347 million ? a 32 percent improvement year-over-year.
Load factor: Revenue passenger miles increased 27 percent on a 32 percent increase in capacity, resulting in a second quarter load factor of 80 percent ? a three point load factor decrease for the quarter year-over-year.
Top line progress: Revenue in the second quarter was up 29 percent versus second quarter 2011. RASM decreased by two percent year-over-year.
Cost control: Operating expense per available seat mile excluding fuel (ex-fuel CASM) decreased by 2 percent in the quarter, reflecting the economies of scale from the Company's growth over the past year.
Cash: The airline ended the quarter with $82 million in unrestricted cash.
This year, Virgin America reached the threshold to be classified a major carrier for reporting purposes by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and as such began reporting its on-time performance, baggage handling and other key operational statistics to the DOT monthly. For the second quarter of 2012, Virgin America achieved an 85.2 percent cumulative on-time performance, placing the carrier seventh for on-time performance among all reporting major U.S. carriers for the quarter. The airline's baggage handling rate for the first six months of 2012 was 0.88 mishandled baggage reports per 1000 guests, which placed it first among all reporting U.S. carriers for baggage reliability for the first half of 2012.

Key milestones achieved in the second quarter of 2012 include:

In June 2012, the airline inaugurated service to Portland International Airport (PDX) from both San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX);
In June 2012, the airline opened a new flight training facility with a state-of-the-art Required Navigational Performance (RNP)-certified CAE Airbus A320 full-flight simulator? the first such pilot training facility of its kind in Northern California;
In May 2012, the airline launched ticket sales on its new Washington Reagan National (DCA) nonstop flight from SFO, after receiving DOT approval to operate the route;
In May 2012,Virgin America, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin Australia, announced a first of its kind joint entertainment, digital and out-of-home advertising campaign to celebrate the unique Virgin in-flight experience and mark the airlines' global frequent flyer partnership ? which went live earlier in the spring of 2012;
In April 2012, Virgin America launched its first flights to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) from SFO and LAX;
In June 2012, Virgin America applied with DOT for its first codeshare agreement with Virgin Australia, which went live in July;
Virgin America added Japan Airlines as an interline partner in June, further expanding the airline's reach. Virgin America has implemented multiple interline partnerships in the first half of 2012. The airline now has 17 interline partners total.
Virgin America flies to San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Washington D.C. (IAD and DCA), Seattle, Las Vegas, San Diego, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Cabos, Cancun, Chicago, Puerto Vallarta, Palm Springs (seasonally), Philadelphia and Portland.

Although a privately held company, Virgin America is announcing these earnings results in advance of the DOT quarterly reports.

This airline's financial performance has gone from bad to worse....I just don't see light at the end of the tunnel
Quoting NWADTWE16 (Reply 7):
I think the doomsayers are just loving this but you dont invest in the airline business expecting short term return. VX is clearly on a 10 year model and i think they are progressing nicely. All figures point to getting closer to their goal each time.

No investor would willingly pour money into an aviation start-up whose business plan didn't forecast any kind of returns until the 10th year. VX can't show any trending data that suggests they are moving closer to profitability; if anything, it's the opposite. One number may look better in one quarter, but every time, another number suffers (i.e., CASM, RASM, etc).

look VX havent made a profit sense it began how long can they keep it up
Quoting NWADTWE16 (Reply 7):
The Company took delivery of one aircraft during the second quarter

And only one more to come in the next year. So much for growth spreading out costs. Their CASM is as low as it's going to go.
Quoting NWADTWE16 (Reply 7):
Cost per available seat mile (CASM) excluding fuel decreased by 1.5 percent, despite the cost pressures of growth, reflecting the benefits of economies of scale that Virgin America will see as growth slows.

Does VX management actually think people will believe this statement? The "cost pressures of growth" are generally DOWNWARD -- because fixed costs like back-office staff, I.T. systems, executive pay, marketing, etc. can be spread over more customers and tickets, because the new employees hired in to support that growth start at the bottom of the pay scale, and because the new aircraft entering the fleet enjoy a maintenance holiday for the first several years. As growth slows, VX will NOT see improved economies of scale; rather their labor & maintenance unit costs will increase.
Quoting NWADTWE16 (Reply 7):
"With improved margins in the second quarter, our investment in building our network over the past two years is beginning to pay off,"

The margins didn't improve because of their "investment in building [the] network." Their margins improved because fuel was less expensive. If fuel costs had stayed level, their operating margin would have been worse than in 2Q2011 at -2.6% vs -2.2%. The EBITDAR number is specious since you can't run the airline without planes and their fleet costs nearly $20 million/month to rent. EBITDAR is up $17 million largely because aircraft rent was up $14 million and fuel was down $5 million.
Quoting NWADTWE16 (Reply 7):
VX is clearly on a 10 year model and i think they are progressing nicely.

VX is not on a "10 year model." They've been planning for an IPO this year or next -- but a net loss of $108 million for the fist six months of this year won't support an IPO in 2013, either.

COLUMBUS, Ohio A common type of geographic mapping software offers a new way to study human remains.

In a recent issue of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, researchers describe how they used commercially available mapping software to identify features inside a human foot bone a new way to study human skeletal variation.

David Rose, a Captain in the Ohio State University Police Division and doctoral student in anthropology, began the project to determine whether the patterns of change inside the bones of human remains could reveal how the bones were used during life.

"Our bones adapt to the load that's placed on them. Patterns of tension and compression show up in our internal bone structure, and this software lets us look at those patterns in a new way," Rose said.

Julie Field, study co-author and assistant professor of anthropology at Ohio State, explained that archaeologists frequently use geographic information system (GIS) software to map the location of objects uncovered at an excavation site.

"We try to identify important clusters of objects such as household tools or agricultural tools that would indicate patterns of human activity," Field explained. "Based on certain scientific criteria that you give it, the software gives you a statistical measure of whether the objects you're looking at actually constitute a cluster."

In this case, the researchers used a program called ArcGIS. But similar types of mapping software can analyze any kind of spatial data, such as crime statistics or flood models, Rose added. He usesthe same program to map line-of-site views to develop security plans for events on campus.

This is the first time anyone has used GIS software to map bone microstructure.

Co-author Sam Stout, professor of anthropology at Ohio State and Rose's advisor, explained why the study of internal bone structure is important.

"Dave's work allows us to visualize, analyze, and compare the distribution of microscopic features that reflect the development and maintenance of bones, which we can relate to skeletal health and disease for example, bone fragility in osteoporosis," Stout said.

Advances that relate to the study of foot bones in particular would be useful in forensics, Rose explained, because of one grisly fact: when unidentified human remains are discovered today, the foot bones are sometimes intact, having been protected by the deceased person's shoes. Any information about the person, such as age, sex, or body size could ultimately aid law enforcement in identifying a body.

For this study, the researchers studied the cross-section of a metatarsal a long bone in the foot from a deceased woman who generously gave her body to the Division of Anatomy's Body Donation Program. Using this bone cross-section, they demonstrated how the software could be used to show the loads experienced in the foot during gait.

Rose recorded an extremely high-resolution image of the bone cross-section under a microscope, and used the software to map the location of key structures called osteons.

Osteons are microscopic structures created throughout life to fix small cracks or to maintain mineral levels in our blood. The size and shape of osteons, along with the direction of the collagen fibers from which they are made inside bone, are influenced by the loads we place on our bones during life.

In this case, the donor's metatarsal bone showed the predicted pattern of normal bone remodeling, with concentrations of particular types of osteons along the top and bottom of the bone which could have been formed by forces experienced as she walked just where researchers would expect to see telltale signs of foot flexure and compression.

This study provides a proof of concept, Rose cautioned, and many more bones would have to be studied before GIS software could provide meaningful insight into bone biology.

"Really, we're just combining very basic principles in GIS and skeletal biology," he said. "But I believe that there is a tremendous opportunity for advancements at the intersection of both disciplines. The real advantage to this method is that it offers a new scale for the study of human variation offering to shed light on how we adapt to our surroundings."

Co-author Amanda Agnew, assistant professor of anatomy, agreed and added that the work "combines bone biology, biomechanics, and biomedical informatics to explore new methods to evaluate old questions."

Taiwanese, Japanese ships clash over disputed islands

Japanese coast guard ships shoot water cannon at Taiwanese fishing boats in the East China Sea in a territorial dispute. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC's Arata Yamamoto and wire reports

About 50 Taiwanese vessels on Tuesday entered waters near a group of uninhabited islands at the center of a bitter territorial dispute involving Japan, China and Taiwan.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed footage of a Japanese coast guard ship shooting water at a Taiwanese fishing boat, while a Taiwanese patrol vessel blasted water at the coast guard ship in reply during an incident near the disputed Senkaku or Diaoyu islands, as they are known respectively in Japan and China/Taiwan.

The Taiwanese vessels ? 40 fishing boats and 10 coast guard ships ? entered the waters to protest the recent Japanese government's purchase of the islands from a private owner.

But by noon Tuesday all of the Taiwanese vessels had left the area, the Japanese coast guard said, after claiming their rights to fish in the area.

Japan infuriates China by buying disputed isles

The islands were nationalized by the Japanese government this month after it emerged that the outspoken governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, had been in negotiations with the islands' owner to seal a more provocative deal by promising to build an emergency port for Japanese fishermen and various weather and communications facilities.

Osamu Fujimura, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, said during a morning press conference that Japan had lodged a protest with Taiwan.

"In terms of the security surrounding the Senkaku Islands, we will continue to work together with the relevant ministries with a sense of alertness, and gather various information and vigilantly monitor the situation," he said.

"Our position is that this needs to be resolved under framework of our friendly ties with Taiwan, and to deal with the situation calmly," he added.

Chinese protesters: 'The Diaoyu islands belong to China!'

While few experts expect a military confrontation, an unintended clash at sea would increase tension, although all sides are expected to try to manage the spat before it spirals out of control.

NBC News emailed Taiwan's foreign ministry requesting comment on the incident and received a reply saying, "Thank you for your concerns about the issue, and please be patient for our further response."

September 18, the anniversary of Japan's 1931 invasion of Manchuria, is seen as a day of national humiliation in China, marked by protests even when relations with Japan are stable. This year's anniversary came amidst a Sino-Japanese dispute over an island chain called the Senkaku islands in Japanese and known to Chinese as the Diaoyu islands. NBC's Angus Walker reports.

The islands are also claimed by China, which has long regarded Taiwan as a breakaway province that is actually part of China.

Meanwhile in China, Japan's Vice-Foreign Minister Chikao Kawai began talks with his Chinese counterpart, Zhang Zhijun, the first diplomatic meeting between the two countries since anti-Japanese riots erupted over 100 cities across China amid rising tensions over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands.

Emotional anniversary reignites anti-Japan protests in China

Before Tuesday's meeting, the Japanese envoy told journalists that he planned to explain Japan's position in a frank manner.

"Considering the difficult situation involving Sino-Japanese relations, we would like to do our best to move our relationship forward,? Kawai said.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Monday suggested that a resolution of the dispute would be difficult.

"China will elaborate on its position on the Diaoyu Islands, demand that Japan correct its mistakes and make efforts to improve Sino-Japanese relations,? Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said, according to the UPI news service.

Toyota's new robot is handy household helper

1 day

An in-home robot for the masses that can fetch objects from the floor and high shelves and?connect you with family and friends via a tablet computer, is being shown off this week at a trade?show in Japan.

The lightweight, cylindrical Human Support Robot (HSR) responds to voice commands as well as a graphic interface on a tablet computer. Its key feature is a folding arm with a two-finger gripper that can pick up stuff from the ground, open curtains, reach high shelves, and other tasks, according to Toyota.?

The arm is about?2.5-feet long and can lift objects weighing up to 2.7 pounds and 5.1 inches wide, which is sufficient to pick up a dropped remote control or fetch an ice cold beer from the fridge.

The 70 pound machine was designed to assist independent home living for people with limited arm or leg mobility. Top speed is only 1.8 miles per hour and the arm moves with insufficient force to cause much trouble, making it safe for indoor, at home use, according to Toyota.?

The robot "can also wear a tablet computer atop its head, which would allow caregivers and family members to communicate with the robot's owner over Skype or other services,"?Gizmag noted?in a story about the robot.

While a price isn?t set for the HSR, it could sell well among Japan?s aging population where insurance will pick up 70 percent of associated costs thanks to a recently passed law to encourage robot technology for elder care.

HSR is just one of many robots?under development that are being designed to work with humans in all kinds of situations from the factory floor to the surface of?Mars.

Certifications and University degree.

Hi all ,

I like to hear your opinion about this because I do have a discrepancy in my education.

Ok i graduated in Economy, but i work as a network engineer and I'm really good at it. I have some industrial certifications, like juniper, cisco and linux.

I just want your opinion guys should i go and get master degree in computer science or should i continue with industrial certifications more exactly should i go for CCIE/JNCIE or Master Degree in computer science ?

I'm confused right right now , because most of the guys that do have a degree in computer science they are... hmm somehow they are mad at me for working as a network engineer(or i just misunderstood them), although I'm better than them.

If I chose one road the other must go on halt, and btw I already made my choice, which is -going with industrial certifications. For one obvious reason, they are more likely to give u a job because you are a professional and you really know what you're doing if you posses a certification, and for my master degree i can get it when I'm 33 or 35 years old .

But i just wanna hear your opinion, what do you guys think ?
