African Union head visits Central African Republic

Associated Press December 30, 2012

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) ? The leader of the African Union, Benin's President Thomas Boni Yayi, has proposed a government of national unity to resolve the rebel conflict in Central African Republic.

Boni Yayi arrived here Sunday to try to find a negotiated resolution to the country's crisis. The president of the African Union met with President Francois Bozize and then made an appeal to the rebels.

"I beg my rebellious brothers, I ask them to cease hostilities, to make peace with President (Francois) Bozize and the Central African people," said Boni Yayi at a press conference in Bangui, the capital. "If you stop fighting, you are helping to consolidate peace in Africa. African people do not deserve all this suffering. The African continent needs peace and not war."

Boni Yayi said that Bozize had pledged to have an open dialogue with the rebels with the goal of establishing a government of national unity, which would include representation from the rebels and the Bozize government.

Bozize also addressed the conference and said, although he plans to stay in power until his term ends in 2016, he is not against having the rebels enter a coalition government with him.

"We'll probably be able to set up a national unity government. I apologize to the suffering Central African people," said Bozize. "It is a message of peace to my brothers of Central African Republic, "said Bozize.

Updated today at 3:10 PM

HOUSTON (AP) -- Former President George H.W. Bush remains in intensive care in a Houston hospital recovering from a fever that arose after a long battle with bronchitis.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday he would release a statement if there was anything to report, but wasn?t sure there would be.

McGrath said Friday that the 88-year-old Bush?s condition continued to improve since moving into intensive care at Methodist Hospital on Sunday. Later Friday, McGrath said that updates on the president would come on an ?as-warranted? basis.

Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough.

Bush, the 41st president, is the country?s oldest living former president by a few months.

Republican Senator: chances for "fiscal cliff" deal "exceedingly good"

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

Huntsville church keeps the memory of Sandy Hook victims alive

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville church is keeping the memory of the 26 Sandy Hook shooting victims alive.

The congregation at the Spirit Filled Worship Center held a special service in their honor.

During the "Young Adult Revival" on Saturday night, the pastor empowered people to do better in 2013.

He made the victims of Sandy Hook the focus of the special service, as a symbol of hope and healing for the new year.

"We just wanted to let them know our hearts are with them and that while they are mourning and going through this, we are in Huntsville praying for them as well," said Pastor Abraham Moore.

With so many young people in the crowd, this tragedy is really hitting home.

"We don't know exactly what they are going through, but we have an idea, and we know it's hard for them," said Latonya Moore.

It has been particularly tough for the parents of this congregation.

"Everyday is precious and we shouldn't take anything for granted. It has allowed the parents to hug their children a little bit more and kiss them a little bit more," said Abraham Moore.

That is why church leaders are working to help everyone get through this difficult time with song and prayer.

"We hear a lot of talk about it and we know a lot of people are hurting who don't even know them," said Layonya Moore.

No matter how much time passes, the congregation at this church says it is not going to let the memory of those victims be forgotten.

Get your fill of the year's final full moon

The final full moon of the year rises on Friday night to cap a year of amazing lunar sky shows. While the bright moon will easily outshine other celestial objects, there is more than meets the eye to Earth's nearest neighbor.

The December full moon is also called the "long-night's moon" since it is the closest full moon to the northern winter solstice (when the nights are longest). This full moon will be visible for the longest amount of time.

From New York, for instance, moonrise on Thursday occurred at 4:17 p.m. ET, and the moon set at 7:12 a.m. Friday morning. That adds up to 14 hours and 55 minutes.

Moon-watching myth
Contrary to popular belief, the full moon not the best time to observe the moon with binoculars or a telescope.

Normally, even with just small optical power we can see a wealth of detail on its surface. But during the full moon phase, the moon appears flat and one-dimensional, as well as dazzlingly bright to the eye.

It is only later in the weekend and into next week that the moon's best features will stand out. As the moon wanes to its gibbous phase, and then to last quarter, those lunar features close to the terminator ? the variable line between the sunlit and darkened portions of the moon ? will appear to stand out in sharp, clear relief. [Amazing Moon Photos of 2012]

The moon will arrive at last quarter phase on Jan. 4 at 11:58 p.m. ET, when its disk will be exactly 50 percent illuminated.

How bright, the full moon?
How does the moon's brightness compare at that moment with when it's full? Most people may believe the moon is half as bright, but in reality astronomers say that the last-quarter moon is only one-eleventh as bright as full. This is because the moon is not a smooth sphere, but has a myriad of craters, mountains and valleys that cast long, distinct shadows across the lunar landscape.

Interestingly, a first-quarter moon is actually slightly brighter than a last-quarter moon, because at first quarter the illuminated half of the moon displays less of the dark surface features known as the "maria," popularly referred to as lunar seas.

And believe or not, it isn?t until just 2.4 days before or after full that the moon actually becomes half as bright as full!

Lunar cycles
Here are some interesting lunar calendar facts that the famed Belgian astronomical calculator Jean Meeus has compiled concerning the phases of the moon.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Cassini orbiter captures Saturn's swirling storms

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The storms of Saturn ripple through the frame of a black-and-white close-up captured by the Cassini orbiter on Christmas Eve.

    2. 2013 might be the year for first 'alien Earth'
    3. Mars rover spends holidays at 'Grandma's House'
    4. After setbacks, Russia boosts space spending

All are cyclical, the most noteworthy being the so-called Metonic Cycle that was independently discovered by the Greek astronomer Meton (born about 460 B.C.). This is a 19-year cycle, after which time the phases of the moon are repeated on the same days of the year, or approximately so.

Take, for instance, Friday?s full moon. Nineteen years from now, in 2031, there?ll be another full moon on Dec. 28.

Another moon cycle fact: After two years, the preceding lunar phase occurs on or very nearly the same calendar date. So in 2014, it will be the first-quarter moon that occurs on Dec. 28.

After eight years, the same lunar phases repeat, but occurring one or two days later in the year. Ancient Greek astronomers called this eight-year cycle the "octaeteris." Indeed, in 2020, a full moon occurs on Dec. 29.

Finally, in our Gregorian calendar, 372 years provides an excellent long-period cycle for the recurrence of a particular phase on a given date. Therefore, we know with absolute certainty that the same full moon that shines down on us on Dec. 28 of 2012 will also be shining on Dec. 28 in the year 2384.

So mark your lunar calendars, and enjoy the lunar display!

6 Rules To De-Stress Your Weekends

Come Friday, you're ready to relax and recharge -- but too many of us sabotage our weekends by cramming in a month of chores or going zombie in front of the TV. Either way, the weekend is a bust. If you want to feel truly refreshed by Monday morning, take to heart the findings of a study showing that in addition to eating, relaxing, and sex, women enjoy themselves most when they're socializing, engaging in spiritual activities, and exercising.

To make the most of your weekend, be sure to pencil in one activity from each category, and let the rules work for you.

Silent Signals You're Stressed

Use Your Social Network

Even if you cherish "just for me" time, organize at least one weekend endeavor where you can bring along a friend.

"Feeling connected and loved are among the biggest predictors of happiness," says Cassie Mogilner, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School who specializes in happiness research.

Another bonus to socializing? It encourages us to spend our time and money on experiences, which research shows make us happier than material objects.

"When something is sitting on your shelf, you get used to it very fast," says Sonja Lyubomirsky, PhD, the author of The How of Happiness. So plan a Saturday-night outing to a play you've read about, or sign up for a cooking class with a pal. You'll enjoy the advantages for weeks or months to come.

The 8 Friends Every Woman Needs

Feed Your Soul

The more frequently that people attend religious services, the more content they are, according to a 2008 study in the Journal of Economic Psychology. Faith and prayer, regardless of religion, satisfy a basic need to feel part of something bigger than ourselves -- and it turns out that volunteering can have a similar effect. "People derive a lot of pleasure from helping others," says Lyubomirsky.

If prayer and volunteering aren't for you, try meditation or a restorative yoga class instead. New research shows that spiritual practices, such as regular mindfulness exercises, can actually change brain structure in a way that promotes a sense of well-being. So as a part of your weekend, set aside some time for prayer or meditation, or volunteer to spend an hour or two at your local animal shelter. It'll lift your spirit?literally. Toshiba preps 20megapixel, backsidelit CMOS sensor for pointandshoot cameras

When smartphones are encroaching on compact cameras' turf, how does a company try to stay relevant making sensors for those cameras? By upping the resolution, of course. Toshiba has given a peek at the TCM5115CL, a 1/2.3-inch, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor that hits 20 megapixels -- a big jump from the 16-megapixel sensors in many point-and-shoots and some smartphones. To combat the noise and sensitivity problems that usually come with a denser design, the electronics giant is using pixels that can absorb 15 percent more of a charge, and therefore more light. Toshiba has primed the sensor for high-speed shooting and video as well, with the potential for 1080p video at 60FPS and 30FPS burst shooting at full resolution, provided the processor can keep up. We're not bracing ourselves for an imminent renaissance among dedicated cameras, however. Mass production doesn't start until August, which suggests we're unlikely to have 20-megapixel shooters in our pockets during summer vacation.

Wild Dolphins Give Gifts To Researchers Studying Them In Tangalooma, Australia

'Tis the season for giving, but in Australia, wild dolphins have been documented offering gifts to the researchers studying them for quite some time.

We hope those "gifts" came with a receipt, though, as the offerings seem likely to trigger the gag reflex in some humans. So far, the presents include eels, tuna, squid, at least one octopus and a variety of other fin fish. Discovery News reports the gifts are highly valued food sources for dolphins.

The first gift, from an adult male dolphin named Fred, was a dead moray eel, offered in July 1998, the Daily Mail notes.

According to a recently released report in the journal Anthrozoos: A Multidisciplinary Journal of the Interactions of People & Animals, a group of wild bottlenose dolphins near the resort of Tangalooma, in Australia, have offered gifts to the biologists studying them at least 22 more times since the first incident with Fred. The paper notes that "[gift] giving has become an established but infrequent part of the culture" of that particular group of dolphins.

While food-sharing is not all that uncommon among animals of the same species, inter-species sharing (aside from the dead birds your cat tracks into the house) is a rare occurrence, Discovery News notes.

As of yet, researchers in Australia aren't 100 percent sure what triggered the dolphins' generosity, but according to EarthSky, they believe it may be some form of play behavior. Other explanations include a desire on the dolphins' part to give back, as the researchers have been feeding them for quite some time. The dolphins may also see the researchers as incompetent hunters that require an occasional handout.

Here come the design patents: new law boosts rights in shapes ...

One of Apple?s key weapons in its legal battle against competitors is a special type of patent that protects the visual appearance of a product. Critics have denounced these patents as a way to own ?rounded rectangles? but we may have to get used to seeing a lot more of them.

Last week, President Obama signed a law that will increase the term and scope of so-called ?design patents.? The law could offer US designers a new way to fight knock-offs ? but some fear it will strain an already over-burdened Patent Office and make America?s troubled patent system even more dysfunctional.

The new design patent law: what it does

Design patents, which protect the ornamental features of an invention, are nothing new. To get a better idea of what they are, imagine a new type of fork that can pick up food better than ever before. The inventor could get a regular patent for the pick-up function ? but she could also get a design patent for distinct scrollwork built into the handle of the fork. A more familiar example is the design patents which cover the look and feel of Apple?s iPad.

apple ipad design patent screenshotFew people had heard of design patents until recently when shoe company Crocs used them to chase away rivals or Apple used its design patents to hammer Samsung for allegedly copying the iPhone and iPad. Design patents have also become more popular as the Supreme Court has taken an increasingly dim view of many conventional utility patents. (See the picture at right, posted by leading patent blog?Patently-O, for examples of Design patents screenshot via PatentlyOdesign patents in court right now).

Now, the just-signed Patent Law Treaties?Implantation?Act of 2012 will see more design patent requests flood in from more places. The main purpose of the law is to harmonize America?s design patent laws with the rest of the world ? in particular, by letting ?inventors? use a single application filed anywhere in the world to seek design rights in many countries at once. For instance, Ikea could submit drawings of a chair in Sweden and then get a US design patent based on the same application.

The law, which is will take effect in about a year, will also increase the design patent term from 14 years to 15 years and allow applicants to seek 100 different design inventions with a single application.

More rights to rectangles?

Richard Stockton, a patent lawyer at Banner & Witcoff in Chicago, says that,?traditionally, the first people to call him about design patents are manufacturers who outsource production to China but then discover the factory owner is replicating their product.

Now, though, he expects?the new treaty rules will lead more foreign companies to apply for design patents in the US.

?Asia is very interested. A lot of people think there will be a snowball effect,? said Stockton.

He adds that recent court fights between Apple and Samsung have awakened people to the fact that design patents are easier to get than utility patents.

?I?ve obtained them in 60 days with some elbow grease,? claimed Stockton, adding that a ?good rule of thumb? price for a basic design patent application is $ 2500-$ 3000 all-in versus several times that for a regular patent. (The 60 day figure might be an outlier ? others say it usually takes more than a year).

Stockton says design patents also pack more of a damages punch than regular patents because, if they are infringed, a court must award damages based on the value of the whole invention ? not just a patented feature.

More patents, more problems?

Sarah Burstein, a design patent expert at the University of Oklahoma, is skeptical the new law is necessary and fears that lawyers will game design patents in the same way they have done with other parts of the patent system.

?The devil is in the details,? she said in a phone interview, and predicted that more applications will arrive from Japan, Asia and the rest of the world. US designers, meanwhile, can likewise seek rights in more places.Baby, problems

Burstein is especially concerned about how the new law, as it stands, requires the US Patent Office to reject design applications from foreign countries within a certain amount of time. If it doesn?t, under the treaty, the applicant is entitled to design rights in America.?And, if a flood of new applications arrive, will the patent office be able to handle them? The office is already struggling to clear backlog and retain qualified examiners?with starting salaries that begin around $ 42,000.

Burstein worries the law?s current structure could lead companies to first seek design rights in countries with weaker standards and then use those overseas rights as a quick way to get design patent protection in the US.

And while the new protections could help US designers in theory, Burstein believes any benefits will not be widespread.

?This won?t help poor design students,? she said.

A bigger question may be why Congress passed the law in the first place. America?s technology and retail sectors are already buckling under a wave of spurious patent lawsuits, many of which involve ?patent trolls? using old patents to extort licensing fees. The new law could provide yet more ammunition for the trolls to shake down productive companies.

And while most people would agree that inventors should have the right to stop rip-offs, America already has a robust trademark and trade dress rules that let them do just that.

Ultimately, design patents may be yet one more area where America discovers that intellectual property rules are a lot like salt ? a little bit can be great but too much ruins everything.

Deep emotions run beneath Russia's adoption ban

The Duma's bill to ban US adoptions of Russian children, which passed another legislative hurdle today, appeals to Russian pride and concerns about the US.

By Mike Eckel,?Correspondent / December 22, 2012

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a news conference in Moscow, Russia, Thursday. Putin says a draft bill banning US adoptions of Russian children is a legitimate response to a new US law that calls for sanctions on Russians deemed to be human rights violators.

Misha Japaridze/AP

You usually can judge Vladimir Putin?s dislike of a reporter's question by the intensity of his expression. Such was the case this week at his annual news conference, when he greeted with a hard scowl the subject of pending Russian legislation that would ban Americans from adopting orphaned children. Mr. Putin unleashed invective on the fact that consular representatives aren?t allowed to visit adopted Russian children in the United States.

?I believe that is unacceptable. Do you think this is normal? How can it be normal when you are humiliated? Do you like it? Are you a sadomasochist or something? They shouldn?t humiliate our country,? he told reporters in Moscow.

As is often the case in Russia, there is the issue of what is going on versus what is really going on. And as is often the case in Russia, it?s complicated.

There is very little doubt as to the goal of the legislation, which passed its third and final reading in the lower house of parliament Friday and must still be signed by Putin. The bill is named after Dima Yakovlev, the toddler who died of heat stroke in 2007 after his adopted father forgot him in a locked car in Virginia for nine hours. The father, Miles Harrison, was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Dima, whose adopted name was Chase. His acquittal in 2008 sparked banner newspaper headlines, incendiary TV news reports, and howls of outrage in Russia.

Lawmakers in the State Duma made it clear that today's legislation is a direct response to the US ?Magnitsky Act,? a law designed to sanction a particular group of Russian officials connected to the death of a whistle-blowing lawyer in a Moscow prison.

In other words, a law designed to punish people tied to a lawyer?s prison death has been answered with a law to prevent people from adopting orphaned children, many of whom have have developmental or other disabilities and will otherwise end up living much of their lives in orphanages that often resemble state mental hospitals of a bygone era.

Adoption is a searingly emotional issue for Russians, and one easily manipulated by the Kremlin. The institution of adoption is relatively uncommon in Russia, for cultural and other reasons. And judging by headlines in the Moscow tabloids, and the rhetoric of some state lawmakers, you?d think that Americans adopt Russian children to eat them.

Veteran Analyst Don Cherry Believes Hockey will be back mid ...

Veteran Analyst Don Cherry Believes Hockey will be back mid-January -NHL Lockout Update

The recent most lockout, which is the 2004-2005 one, is too fresh and different from the current deadlock that has made the life of many difficult so far as there is no relief in sight, for veteran hockey analyst Don Cherry.

According to Cherry, mid-January is the target for which fans should await a final decision from the National Hockey League (NHL) about whether they are going to be carrying on with what remains of the 2012-2013 regular season or just call it all off. But Don Cherry, being the optimistic fan that he is, is confident about having hockey back by then.

"Look to the middle of January for the game to return!" said Cherry from his verified Twitter account. "Those people who say it won't be good hockey because it's only half a season don't know what they're talking about."

Cherry compares the current lockout to the one faced by the league back in 1994-1995. That season was not entirely called off, but there were similar issues like player share in team revenue and all sorts of stuff, but both sides eventually managed to work something out.

He is also looking forward to seeing a lot of fast paced hockey action as he reminded followers that when it happened in the earlier 90?s, there was still much excitement.

"Don't you remember the last time it was half a season and New Jersey won the Cup? It was a sprint not a marathon," added Cherry. "Play within their own conference. Lots of action. The guys know every game is important. Won't have the half season blahs. It will be terrific!"

The 78-year-old continued to say that he would not be thinking that the league and labour union will agree on a deal before reaching the edge, but it certainly does seem like both stakeholders are close to that.

It has been over three months since the previous collective bargaining agreement came to an end and nearly 100 days have gone by. Fans are hopeful and are certainly looking forward to that mid-January deadline that everyone is now talking about.

Calgary widow's videos offer glimpse into diabetes epidemic (with ...

CALGARY ? On the night of Sept. 15, 2012, Jim and Judy Wilkie were having a rare disagreement.

?He wanted to stay,? says the 62-year-old Calgary native. ?He was in a lot of pain and I knew he was only hanging on for me.?

The next evening, Wilkie?s husband of 44 years closed his eyes for the last time, his passing a peaceful conclusion to years of severe discomfort and deterioration from the myriad complications that can accompany Type 2 diabetes.

Before he died, though, Jim had made sure he left a legacy for the world, one in which he gave a graphic, no-holds-barred depiction of what it was like to live, and die, with the disease. With the help of his wife, who videotaped their sessions together, the two created hours worth of video so that others might learn from his ordeal.

?Diabetes is an epidemic, there are many more families that will find themselves in our situation,? says Wilkie of Type 2 diabetes, which currently afflicts more than three million Canadians, a number expected to rise to 3.7 million by 2020. ?Someone has to speak up about what it?s like to go through this.?

Type 1 diabetes, most commonly diagnosed in people before age 30, is due to the pancreas not being able to produce insulin. It is not preventable, and its cause is still unknown.

Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is largely blamed on a sedentary lifestyle, bad nutrition and smoking. Numerous studies have shown that by increasing physical activity, keeping a healthy weight and eating well, many of the symptoms can either be prevented entirely or managed.

The explosion in obesity rates in North America have resulted in more than 26 million people, an increasing number of them under the age of 45, being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

Jim Wilkie wasn?t obese; he didn?t smoke and rarely drank alcohol. What the nearly 20-year employee of the Coca-Cola Company?s Calgary bottling plant did do was rely on soda pop to keep him fuelled throughout the day; frequent stops to fast-food restaurants were also part of his daily routine.

?That was our demise,? says Judy Wilkie of the all-too-common combination of sugary soda drinks and prepared foods. ?There is too much fructose and sugar everywhere, it?s one of the big reasons why there are so many more people today being diagnosed.?

His last years of struggle were in stark contrast to the vibrant life Jim Wilkie lived for 66 years.

?He was such a beautiful person, so full of heart and energy,? says Wilkie of the man she fell in love with when she was just 16 years old.

Jim, who was 20, was in the military and had just moved to Calgary from Nova Scotia to train at Canadian Forces Base Calgary (the base was closed in 1998). The pair met at a house party just a few blocks from the base as he was preparing for a tour in Cyprus.

?From that moment on, we were in our own world together,? says Judy, adding that they eloped to Moscow, Idaho, when she turned 18. ?My parents wanted me to marry a lawyer, not a soldier,? she says with a chuckle.

The young couple settled in southwest Calgary, where Judy juggled a successful catering business with raising two active boys.

When he wasn?t busy with his job at Coca-Cola, Jim played football with his boys and golf with his best friends. Son Bob took to the game of hockey, playing for the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers.

?We had the ultimate lifestyle,? says Judy of those years. ?Life was so good.?

Things began to change as Jim entered his mid-50s. He started feeling lethargic, experiencing occasional numbness in his feet. At his wife?s urging, he finally went to a doctor. ?It?s such a silent disease, so internal,? says Judy. ?The doctor told him he had high blood pressure and that the diabetes had already done a lot of damage.?

Over the next decade, Jim?s condition would steadily worsen. After years of infections and mobility issues, he woke up one morning to find his left foot had turned black. ?He had a toe and a piece of foot amputated,? says Judy.

That crisis would be followed by ever more serious ones. He had his right leg amputated just below the knee; his condition was also resulting in troubles with both his eyesight and hearing.

?Then his kidneys gave out,? says Judy, who then accepted the offer by their son Bob to move her and Jim into the country home he shared with his wife and two kids. ?He needed dialysis three times a week.?

Spending the past two years in their eldest son?s home, with a view of the Rockies and everyday contact with the grandkids, says Judy, ?was the greatest gift we could have received.?

This past August, Jim?s condition worsened to the point he had to be hospitalized. ?We decided to start videotaping his story,? she says.

Once she gets through her first Christmas without her beloved husband, Judy says she plans to start a non-profit organization called Sweet Ripple of Change, with a website that will include a blog, information on resources for diabetics and Jim?s final videos.

?Our experience will be lived by millions of people,? she says of the videos that include heartbreaking descriptions by her husband about the trauma of losing a limb.

?I hope we can create the same kind of awareness about diabetes as others have done about smoking.?

Iran media report new cyberattack by Stuxnet worm

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? An Iranian semi-official news agency says there has been another cyberattack by the sophisticated computer worm Stuxnet, this time on the industries in the country's south.

Tuesday's report by ISNA quotes provincial civil defense chief Ali Akbar Akhavan as saying the virus targeted a power plant and some other industries in Hormozgan province in recent months.

Akhavan says Iranian computer experts were able to "successfully stop" the worm.

Iran has repeatedly claimed defusing cyber worms and malware, including Stuxnet and Flame viruses that targeted the vital oil sector, which provides 80 percent of the country's foreign revenue.

Tehran has said both worms are part of a secret U.S.-Israeli program that seeks to destabilize Iran's nuclear program.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons program, a charge Tehran denies.

Oppo Ulike 2 goes on sale in China with 5MP front-facing camera and free toothpicks

Oppo Ulike 2 now on sale in China, comes with 5megapixel frontfacing camera and free toothpicks

Last month, tucked in alongside news of the 1080p Find5, we got word of another, less macho Oppo phone coming to China -- the Ulike 2. This Ice Cream Sandwich-based handset went on sale today for the equivalent of $370, and you don't have to be in love with its ladyphone ways to acknowledge that it at least tries something different. Its front-facing camera rocks a full 5-megapixel resolution, putting the HTC One X+'s vanity cam to shame, while a countdown timer and a bunch of beautification filters (including face slimming and skin whitening) try to make all that extra detail work in your favor. The other specs are mediocre at best, including the 960 x 540, 4.5-inch LCD and 16GB of non-expandable storage, but Oppo is hardly alone in its views on what women want.

Get Unstuck! Galvanize Your Thoughts With Great Home ...

Have you ever began a home improvement project and it became more that you ever anticipated?

One option that many other homeowners use is hiring a temporary labor service crew. If you decide to do this with your next big project, make sure that there are no language issues. There should be at least one person with the crew that can speak both your language and the language of the other workers.

If you can?t stand the smell of wet paint, try mixing a few drops of real vanilla extract into each gallon of paint?so long as you aren?t using white. The lovely smell of vanilla will overpower the paint fumes, so painting a room or piece of furniture can become a much more pleasant task.

If you are looking for home improvement ideas that can add value to your house, then lighten everything up by adding space if you can. If your rooms are small, then this gives a cramped/dark feeling to them. Look to see if you can knock down a wall to combine two rooms (possibly between a kitchen and dining room). This will give a light and airy feeling to the space.

What better way to enhance the aesthetics of your home than a nice patio or deck. Relax out in the sun or BBQ on a Sunday afternoon. Wooden decks with nice finishes create a space for enjoyment in your back yard and beautifully accessorize your home. Think about planning that wooden deck or patio today.

Add curb appeal and increase the value of your home by adding one or two coats of high-gloss paint to your front door and shutters. Homes with light-colored brick or vinyl siding look especially attractive with bright red or blue paint; a darkly colored home exterior looks great with a deep, cool color like eggplant or jade green.

Make sure that your contractor checks on the building code, whenever you make a major change to your house! Often, people will make sweeping changes to their house just because they feel like it or because they feel it will make their home more grand. If you make a change that causes a safety issue, you could end up in major trouble down the line.

Consider installing a recycling center into your new renovated kitchen to make separating your garbage, compost, and recyclables easily. This will encourage your family to make sure they?re pitching in and not throwing things out because sorting them is just too difficult. Helping the environment can be done one can or jar a time.

If you are looking to install skylights or already have them in your home, it can be a costly item during summertime. In the summer months, the sun is shining overhead emitting lots of heat. The heat will require you to run your air conditioner at a higher level. However, in recent years, there has been high quality glazes developed that aid your windows in blocking out excessive heat and keeping it in during winter months. Talk to your local window dealer about the benefits of purchasing glazed windows.

When you are trying to narrow down which home improvements to tackle first, a good plan is to make a wish list first, of everything that you would do if you could do it all. Go through your home and figure out what needs fixed and make a note of each item. Then you can begin to prioritize what items are the most pressing and what you can afford to fix first.

If safety is a concern, install motion detectors. These are a great home improvement project because not only is it simple and fairly inexpensive, it also deters thieves and lowers your insurance premiums. These motion detectors activate lights when motion is detected, letting you know when someone has entered your home.

Bathroom Vanities

Adequate lighting in a bathroom has everything to do with making the most out of your space. It is important that the right lighting scheme be used. If you use the right amount of light, it can make your bathroom the relaxing space that it needs to be. Evaluate your bathroom lighting today, and see if there are any improvements you can make.

Choose satin paint in an area that may need constant cleaning. Satin paint has a gorgeous sheen, and is suitable for family room and children?s rooms, and the bathroom or kitchen, as it is very easy to clean. Bear in mind that touch-ups can be difficult, as a difference in sheen would be obvious.

When painting your bathroom, kitchen, or other area that sees lots of moisture (or kids? hands), choose a semi-gloss or high-gloss paint. Unlike flat (matte) paints, glossy surfaces are easier to wipe clean and are less likely to show spots when exposed to moisture from steamy showers or boiling pots.

As more and more people look for affordable ways to convey style and distinction, lighting companies are stepping up to the plate with mid-range price points and smaller versions of their most elaborate pieces. A mini-chandelier in your bedroom or master bathroom is a tongue-in-cheek accent piece that is perfectly suited to a contemporary look and feel.

Avoid making expensive renovations based on personal tastes. Spending $1,000 a tile on your bathroom may seem like a good plan but the odds are if you eventually sell, you will not recoup that money. If the change is not something that can be appreciated by someone other than you, consider doing something different.

If you are buying a new bathtub, be sure to sit in the tub and lie back in it to be certain it?s the right size and shape for you before purchasing it. Also, take good measurements of your bathroom space to be sure the tub will fit in the space you have.

Try updating your bathrooms because, like the kitchen, this room is very important, too. It can easily be improved without a lot of money. Try simple things like a new toilet seat or a fancier sink. They can totally transform the look and feel of the bathroom. Also, try replacing your tile floors, walls, and re-grouting your shower and tub.

Instead of purchasing white towels for your bathroom, choose darker colors or patterns. White is a color that picks up everything and needs constant bleaching. You can choose to have your fingertip towels and washcloths to be one color and your actual bath towels to be a different color altogether. It saves a lot of trouble when washing and makes your bathroom appear a lot cleaner and put together.

When it comes to home improvement, it is important to know which types of improvements will add to the value of your home and which will not. This will be important when it does come time to sell your house. Such general maintenance such as sealing the driveway and replacing the roof will not add to the value, however, an additional bathroom or a patio may.

If you?re trying to improve the look of your kitchen or bathroom, consider installing a colorful back splash. You can purchase colorful tiles for really cheap. If you have the skills to install the tile by yourself, you will save money by not having to hire someone to do the work for you.

Russia welcomes any offer to give Assad refuge

BEIRUT (AP) ? Russia would welcome any country's offer of safe haven for Syrian President Bashar Assad, but has no plans to make one of its own, Moscow's foreign minister said in the latest comments to suggest a growing distance between the two allies.

Sergey Lavrov's remarks on Friday night were among the clearest signs yet that Russia could be preparing for a Syria without Assad, as rebel pressure on the embattled leader intensifies. Over the past four weeks, fighting has reached Damascus, his seat of power, and rebels have captured a string of military bases.

Up to now, Russia has vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Syria's government to stop the violence that has killed more than 40,000 people over the past 21 months. While Russian leaders have given no concrete signs that stance has changed, their tone has shifted as rebels advance on the outskirts of the capital.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin distanced himself further than ever from the Syrian president, saying Russia does not seek to protect him and suggesting his regime is growing weaker.

Speaking to reporters late Friday, Lavrov reiterated Moscow's position that "it doesn't invite President Assad here," although he said other countries had asked Russia to convey their offer of safe passage to Assad.

While he would not name the countries, Lavrov said Russia had responded by telling them to go directly to the Syrian leader.

"If there is anyone willing to provide him guarantees, they are welcome!" Lavrov said on board a plane returning from Brussels, where he attended a Russia-EU summit.

"We would be the first to cross ourselves and say: "Thank God, the carnage is over! If it indeed ends the carnage, which is far from certain."

Syria's conflict started in March last year as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. But the bloody crackdown that followed led rebels to take up arms, and the ensuing fighting transformed into a civil war.

The regime has come under added condemnation in recent weeks as Western officials raise concerns Assad might use chemical weapons against rebels in an act of desperation.

Syria refuses to confirm or deny if it has such weapons but is believed to have nerve agents as well as mustard gas. It also possesses Scud missiles capable of delivering them.

Lavrov said the Syrian government has pulled its chemical weapons together to one or two locations from several arsenals across the country to keep them safe amid the rebel onslaught.

"According to the information we have, as well as the data of the U.S. and European special services, the government is doing everything to secure it," he said. "The Syrian government has concentrated the stockpiles in one or two centers, unlike the past when they were scattered across the country."

Lavrov added that U.N.-Arab League peace envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, would visit Moscow for talks before the year's end.

The conflict's sectarian dimension looked set to deepen at the weekend, as rebels threated to storm two predominantly Christian towns in a central region if residents do not "evict" government troops they say are using the towns as a base to attack nearby areas.

A video released by rebels showed Rashid Abul-Fidaa, who identified himself as the commander of the Ansar Brigade for Hama province, calling on locals in Mahrada and Sqailbiyeh to rise up against Assad's forces or prepare for an assault.

"You should perform your duty by evicting Assad's gangs," said Abdul-Fidaa, who wore an Islamic headband and was surrounded by gunmen. "Otherwise our warriors will storm the hideouts of the Assad gangs."

He also accused regime forces of taking positions in the two towns in order to "incite sectarian strife" between Christians and the predominantly Sunni opposition. Assad belongs to the Alawite minority sect, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam.

The threat comes just two days after a U.N. team investigating human rights abuses in Syria accused anti-Assad militants of hiding among the civilian population, triggering strikes by government artillery and the air force.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the activist group which reported the rebel ultimatum on Saturday, said such an attack by rebels could force thousands of Christians from their homes.

Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Syria's population, say they are particularly vulnerable to the violence sweeping the country of 22 million people. They are fearful that Syria will become another Iraq, with Christians caught in the crossfire between rival Islamic groups.

Clashes between troops and rebels in the central city of Homs, Syria's third largest, have already displaced tens of thousands of Christians, most of whom either fled to the relatively safe coastal areas or to neighboring Lebanon.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said some Christians and Alawites have also left Hama province in the past several days to escape violence. He said some of them found shelter in the coastal city of Tartus.

In Damascus, the new head of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch said that Christians in Syria had deep roots in the country and were not part of the conflict. Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Patriarch John X. Yazigi urged rival factions to negotiate a settlement.

Violence continued unabated on Saturday, particularly in the capital.

The Observatory said a car bomb went off in the Damascus neighborhood of Qaboun, killing at least five people and wounding others. A Syrian official confirmed the blast but had no immediate comment regarding casualties.

Elsewhere, the Syrian army said in a statement carried on state-run TV that it had repelled a rebel attack on a military base that killed a regimental commander in the Damascus suburb of Chebaa.

Also in Damascus, the state-run news agency SANA said gunmen assassinated a cameraman for the government's TV station, the latest such killing in recent months.

In another development, 11 rebel groups said they have formed a new coalition, the Syrian Islamic Front.

A statement issued by the new group, dated Dec. 21 and posted on a militant website Saturday, described it as "a comprehensive Islamic front that adopts Islam as a religion, doctrine, approach and conduct."

Several rebel groups have declared their own coalitions in Syria, including one calling itself an "Islamic state" in the embattled northern city of Aleppo.

The statement said the new group will work to avoid differences or disputes with the other Islamic groups.
